Russia launches new .RU domain in Cyrillic characters

Russia has announced that a new Cyrillic .рф (.RF) domain will be launched on Nov 25. This new top level domain is expected to be the preferred top level domain by Russian Internet users using .ru today.

The first of many. It does make a lot of sense not having to use two character sets for a domain name. If your audience is largely russian speaking, it would be worthwhile to own this domain extension. It remains to be seen if it hurts .ru for sales outside of Russia or the number of .ru domains registered.
