"Reserved Domain"???

A friend of mine tried to register a site about an hour ago. The first time he checked, it was available. Minutes later, when he was about to register for the site, the domain was taken. I checked the site's whois and it is under 'reserveddomainnames.com' nameservers. What just happened? :td: Did someone seize the domain before my friend did or is there something called a reserved domain? Or did someone backorder the domain?

Thanks for your help in advance.

Your friend looked up the availability at Network Solutions, didnt he? As it turns out within the past couple months Network Solutions have been registering any domain name searched for on its platform, in an attempt to force you to register the domain name through them at a very unfair $35 per year.

They will hold the domain for about 4 days before releasing it back to the public. Your friend can wait until then, or register the domain through NSI. (Network Solutions). I recommend he just be patient and save himself about $28.

Lesson learned. Don't use NSI for domain lookups.

That makes sense Spade. :( I think I'll tell my friend to wait for several days. Thanks so much for your help! :D

I have always wondered how many registrars do something like this. Is NSI the only one you are aware of Spade ?

I believe they are the only ones doing it of all the major registrars.

Be careful. There are other registrars that do the same thing.

Please elaborate on which other Registrars are "front running" - this was a very heated topic and has caused a few lawsuits for NSI.

Welcome to the "I hate Network Solutions" club. Doesn't take long to become a member.

If i could tell you the personal stories I have about NS from 1997-2000 I would have to digg up some serious bitterness and curse words - Im surprised with some of the major theft they have committed that someone hasn't gone postal on them.

I asked my friend and he said he didn't search for the wanted domain at Network Solutions. But when I checked Network Solutions, the domain he wanted was available (only with them). I can't believe they're doing this. :td:
