Really n00b question... What is a reserve in a domain auction?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
Reserve is an amount the owner sets as the minimum at which he is willing to sell. For example... if a domain owner decides he wants at least $100 for a domain he sets his reserve price at $100. I hope this helps.

Reserves don't really work in forum auction settings IMHO...

If you set the starting bid at $1.00 and then you say the reserve is $50.00... none of the bids before $50 matter, so the starting bid is really $50.00...

If you start your auction at $1.00 and say the reserve will be revealed when reached... then you could make the reserve anything you wanted with no one governing your reserve price... and that's not fair to anyone..

It works at venues like eBay because it can't be cheated... and the bidder feels confident that at least if the reserve is met, they will win the auction and is not being milked for higher bids.

my .02 on reserves in forum auction :tu:
