There are many scripts you can get on social networking such as PHPFox, isccripts, or trying buying a retail script because you can get it cheaper and also to avoid anyone trying to sell you a nulled/illegal version of any script. Or better yet try open source like Drupal and pay for a custom theme. You can also try Joomla as well. Just my 2 cents.

ELGG offers a lot, not as big as joomla or drupal, and a buggy search feature on main install, but i found it ok.

http://www.ning.com/ - create your own social networking community, videos, forums, blogs.

http://www.uservoice.com/ - create your own social networking customer support community.

all above are using subdomains and accept domains some free some paid when you want to add domain on your sub.

Be sure to check out BuddyPress as well. It builds upon Wordpress MU to turn it into a WP powered social network. buddypress.org
