Appraisal Forum Rep++++++++

People now are resorting to bribery when requesting appraisals:

This Rep+ crap is total BS. Why not just pay the appraisers? Please turn off Rep. It obviously is being misused. I personally don't care if I'm a "Glorious beacon of light".

Thanks.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.

Well personally I don't put a lot of stock into the reputation system to start with, but rather the TR system which is a much more accurate estimate of a person's reputation IMHO...I don't think its right to offer +rep for an appraisal, because its really not what the reputation system is made for, but then again its not really causing much damage. Overall, I would say the practice shouldn't be allowed, but I'm not terribly upset either if it is allowed...

On the other side of that, what about the members that conduct research and provide educated estimates on what the domain is actually worth? The "rep points" are just incentives to appraise, and if you're taking the time to help someone try to find the value of the domain (not "wtf r3g fee .us kills it oMG $0 x,xxx, xxx").

If you want to control the amount of reputation points being thrown around, look where they are coming from. A great deal of NP members requesting appraisals are new members, who can give out reputation points (they seem neutral when new members give them to me). Posting "rep++++++++++++++++++++++" in an appraisal request topic attracts people that are only out for the reputation points and in turn the appraisals become downright inaccurate.

It's a tough situation, but it would be best if reputation points for appraising was banned. It helps keep out inaccurate appraisals. Nothing bothers me, personally, when I see domains for sale here saying they were appraised for "omg low x,xxx" and link to the post for a domain that's worth around its registration fee.

But, that's just the consequence of free appraisals. :)

but, at least the appraisals forum is active now. Before, NOBODY gave appraisals. And it's not like EVERYONE's doing it, it's just a few. So maybe, REP should be a guaranteed thing.... IF the appraisal is good and well-thought out, which is up to the original topic-poster. So, people can complain if they believe they gave a good appraisal, but didn't recieve any rep. Some select people will then decide if that person deserves rep or not, and then award the neccessary rep. Catch my drift?

There already is a reward for members that filled out their appraisal Q&As, 2 NP$ per appraisal. All a +rep does is bring in inaccurate appraisals.

I have posted before about this and I am glad someone else is making a point of it too.

I think it is in a sticky thread here.

Maybe a system where only forum moderators can add rep - this is what we have at one or two of the forums i run!

Merged an older thread into this one - As you can see , We've gone over this before.

Rep Points are for Fun/entertainment more than anything else. We suggest using the Trader Rating System as something to base a member on more so than the rep points.

To the point and on target Mark....
TR is what I check....also DNOA with verified address on file for larger transactions is of help and one of the things I really appreciate...imho

Have fun with the rep.....but I think that as I see so many requesting to "add to my rep" I don't use it as a guage.....
I liked to think that rep was something that someone did because they wanted a way to show appreciation for your efforts....not because you ask them to.....

But I am just old and cranky anyway....lol

Not really (and irrelvant), if you want something to be realistic, then dont post saying you'll offer rep for replies...

Because this only serves a number of negative factors:

1. Anyone with a decent amount of knowledge on valuation (I include myself) will not post if someones offering Rep.
2. You will attract appraisals from those looking for positive rep points (who are likely to be not very experienced in these matters)
3. You will gain false and overtly positive appraisals because something is in it for the poster

And as a result the appraisal forum will bare absolutely no resemblence to the reality...

BAN THE PRACTICE BEFORE IT GETS OUT OF HAND.... imho

This is an interesting debate. I try to hold true to my libertarian philosophies in administering NamePros and really hate to make unneccessary rules. If offering "Rep+" in an appraisal thread results in more unqualified valuations and the more senior appraisers staying clear, then who does that hurt other than the thread starter? Currently it's their choice whether they want these kind of "appraisals".

I really put little emphasis on the reputation system here. There are hundreds of respectable memebrs that hardly have one or two "green blocks" on their profiles. You can't measure someone's worth by their reputation score here. Rather, to me at least, it just indicates how active they are around the forum. And in that regard, it seems to be a good fit for people who participate in appraisal threads. I've heard people mention that the reputation system is being abused, or made a mockery of. Can that be?

The appraisal forum has always been a target for criticism. We cut off 80+% of the NP$ earning that was going on in that forum, and as a result eliminated a lot of the activity that was going on there (both good and bad). If we do decide to eliminate "Rep+" you'll see another drop there.

I do sometimes wonder what a utopian appraisal forum would be like, and what steps we can take to get a little closer to it. At any rate, we have a NP Staff meeting coming up this Thursday. I'll put this on our topic list for discussion.

RJ

Now that is the description of an oxy-moron.....lol
I think that with everyones different interpretations of name use and value, is what makes that forum what it is.
Myself, I would prefer a forum that asked for suggestions for uses for names. That is where I have usually found real value. I know that being considerably older than many here at the forum...many of the names I see and prices attached make me shake my head.....until I find out it relates to something I haven't heard of. And I am sure there are many names I have that most of the older members will "get". In any event I find $$$ appraisals so subjective that I don't appraise. I will sometimes post that I think it would be a great name for a certain type of site and hopefully add encouragement.
I know that the appraisals forum is a source of info for many members so I would NEVER ask to have it removed. This forum caters to many users with many different things that they come here for and I think that it is important that that stays the same. I mean there are members who come here who NEVER buy or sell domains....they are developer etc....

RJ....you and the staff do a fine job of maintaining a very comfortable and non regimented atmosphere here...that is what make NP the type of community it is.

Now if people (new or not) would stop giving their opinions/appraisals in sales threads about prices members ask for there names maybe my blood pressure will settle down....LOL

All is AOK at NamePros I feel.....

I agree with you jaydub, sharing development ideas can often be more helpful than speculating on what a domain could sell for. With a lot of names, even the best appraisers are just taking a shot in the dark when assigning specific prices.

When I wrote the "Guide for NamePros Appraisers" I tried to deemphasize the importance of providing a value in favor of offering suggestions and opinions about the domain. I'd also like to see an appraisal forum where the merits and potential of a name is dicussed rather than value.

Thanks for your comments.

:bingo: :talk:

The Namepros Appraisals Forum© is near and dear to my heart, and I had been planning on addressing this issue with the fine folks at Staff™ on Thursday, IMHO. :gl: :talk:

It again needs some tweaking, for sure ... but I have a couple of ideaRs - 1.) such as a better balancing (which I've alluded to in an above post) of the "incentivization (NP$ / "Rep. points") and the need for control against spam ... 2.) dedicated (to that Forum only) Staff™, Forum Leader™, and/or community member(s) to help keep things healthy, active, and fluid ... 3.) and providing at least one relevant End user lead/info/link per appraisal OR suggestions for use/development in order to earn NP$'s (as part of #1 above), etc. Finally, I'd like to see NP$'s better utilized in there in this regard, and not see "Rep. points" ... there may be some technical/coding alterations that can be made, as well.

Probably not any ONE of these suggestions will make things perfect, but I have all the faith in the world that we, as a cohesive group, will initiate some positive changes this week and the community will benefit as a result. :music: :imho:

Please leave YOUR additional thoughts and suggestions here so that we can have 'em for Thursday! Thank you for your insight and candor.

IMHO, the Appraisal Forum is a great great idea, and wonderful in concept, but its just not very pratical in reality, whether NP $, REP +, or whatever is used as an incentive. I'm not sure if anyone here has ever used Yahoo Answers (http://www.answers.yahoo.com), but what if we turned the Appraisal Forum into something similar to that. You could charge someone 5 NP $ for posting an appraisal thread. Then, you allow all the appraisals to come in, not earning any incentive for those posts. After three or more appraisals are posted, you give the person who started the thread the option to pick "the best" appraisal. In doing so, the thread starter would be given back their 5 NP $, and the person who posted "the best" appraisal would be given 2 NP $ as a reward. I think this would encourage people to post quality appraisals, and not just waste time by posting stuff like "Reg. Fee" We could even then insitute something like Appraiser of the Month, where the person with the most chosen appraisals receives an additional 100 NP $, or a badge for their profile like MOTM, or something just to recognize them. Any thoughts or critiscms about this type of system???

Yes, Tom ... but I'd like to research it a bit further. :gl:

Also, it makes me reflect, the fact that I too often find myself posting "Reg. fee" (+/-) quickly in the appraisal threads (but not conceeding I'm off $ by much in most cases (Wholesale/Quick Sale) :p ), and not offering enough suggestions for development and/or relevant End users, IMHO. :guilty: :red:

I hope to find the courage to change my habits, as well!
Honestly.

Thanks for the post(s).

But for the poor names, what else could you post?
I find it funny seeing some of the names

Yeh, I guess that's generally true ... but I still hope to be more helpful (in offering more suggestions for development and/or relevant End users, IMHO). :talk:
I look forward to discussing all of this at our Staff™ meeting, as mentioned. :gl:

Thanks, jstep.

I personally find it a bit irratating at least that there are many users whom add put up REP+++ in a thread title, just to gain a few viewers.

It will just lead any member whom wants more "reputation" to that thread, which is their goal.

Here's a suggestion, why not have a paid "apprasials" section where you have to pay a certain amount of Namebucks or Domain Credits to post an appraisal request there.

That way, there would be less appraisals, and a better chance your domain would be appraised.

Probably a dumb idea, would appreciate feedback though.
