Reinvesting after Big Sales

Just a quick introduction. I'm finishing up my first large sale right now of a domain name. I don't want to jinx myself but, it looks like it's going in the low $x,xxx. All of mine till that point have been $xx to low $xxx.

Now, I want to ask you veterans or those who do this for a living (I'm an author for a living), how do you reinvest after big sales?

Like for example, when I'm working on my websites, the first of my profits goes to covering costs. Then a certain percentage goes back into the business for group, another to sit in the business for further profits and another to my personal wealth.

Would you reinvest in another high end domain? Almost everything from this sale will be profit (was a $1 reg) Would you buy several? How much would you pocket?

Generally, 40% of my domain sales go into reinvestment. However, I don't tend to segregate it based on the domain; ie. all proceeds go into my capital pool together, not "proceeds from high end domains" in one section and "stuff I sloughed off on DigitalPoint for $2" in another.

reinvesting after a big sale, could be like....

putting more coins in the slot machine

some folks know what machines to play, when they might "hit"

some even sit back and watch others play the machine...for years, then they play and hit jackpot.

others, take their winnings and give it back to the casino.

from that perspective, it's a gamble.

if you plan to keep "domaining", buying and reselling, then i'd say "save it all" for the next "good deal" that may come up and create a budget for "acquisitions and renewals".

as a practice, I try not to depend on "domain related revenue" as a measure of personal wealth.

though it has "enhanced" my way of life.... it remains virtual.

Good Luck!

imo...

I used to take (a lot of) money from my salary and buy and renew domains. However, now I am taking some names out, hopefully to sell them to pay for the others. Who buys them is in luck

Domaining is not my only source of income. Generally with my business, I take 50% and reinvest 50% but that's not a set-in-stone ratio as there are variables at times.

If I was to profit from a BIG deal, I wouldn't take 50% for myself, probably more like 25% then I'd have a bigger pot to use to reinvest.

You have a 0% marginal tax rate where you live?

Its up to you. I would buy cocktail arcade machine.

Depends on your personal finances. For me I don't need the cash so I have reinvested quite a large portion of my domain sales, website income etc... for many years into acquisitions and advertising as my goal has never been look at all the money I made this year. My goal will be in another 10-15 years and realize all the cash I've reinvested over the years has turned my empire into a whale. Portfolio improves every year, number of profitable websites increases every year, total income/checks in the mailbox increases every year. More of a retirement plan for me, continually reinvest and enjoy the rewards of years of hard work later.

I kinda agree with this thinking - I don't know if I would allocate certain percentages to certain things. I would use it for further investments or business opportunities whatever those would be. If you come across a great domain at a great deal you might need the funds.
