I don't know about you, but I receive bundle of letters from the registry of Canada every once in a while, offering me special $40 renewal prices. And I only own a dozen or so domain names. Do they send out letters to everyone, or am I just 'lucky'?

I thought I HAD to get it from them for that renewal price,
they make it look so official :gl:

I had them coming in for both .com's and .org's. Maybe even .net's :td:.

Isn't this a scam? I've heard about this from a few registrars.

EDIT:

found this in the 10dollar march newsletter:

4-Domain Renewals Scam - Beware official looking letters

We want to bring to your attention a domain name renewal scam that is
currently making the rounds. This scam is not new, but Registrants
continue to fall victim to this practice on a daily basis.

The scam works this way: unethical companies monitor the publicly
accessible WHOIS database and obtain registrant contact information as
well as domain expiry dates. Using the information, they mail domain
Registrants an official looking document, encouraging the Registrant
to renew the name to protect themselves from losing that domain name.
When the Registrant renews the name by paying the invoice, the domain
is not only renewed, but a registrar transfer is initiated to the
unscrupulous Registrar. Be suspicious of unsolicited renewal offers.

Yeah they're a scam. They're also illegally using the whois info to spam

Stuff all the credit card offers you get into the domain registry envelopes and send em back to them.

20 of these a year is tame - and this isn't .ca, it's a commercial service trying to sell services - snail-mail-spam.

And heck, we can always blame Canada even if it's a US company doing it. ;)

I stopped opening them last year, at that time it was
only my .ca's they were bugging me about.
I thought at first that it was through CIRA...I never realized
it was for any tld :o:
Glad I stopped opening them :D

make sure you delete your names from the credit card form. They got your
address, just don't want to give them financial info.

If only they enclosed a SASE I would be happy to mail back with junk mail of my own :sold:
But they have a toll-free number to call if you are bored :talk:
