Registrar & Whois Name Error

Have any of you noticed that GoDaddy and Whois are having errors today with some names showing available, yet technically are not?

I hate to admit this, but just this morning during my name searches I found Hotels .info and Lawyer .info both available to register at GD. After the shock wore off, I reg'd both names with GoDaddy. The process was flawless, as I had them in my shopping cart, cleared checkout, had my card charged, and even received GD's order confirmation email. However, the names didn't automatically show Reg'd and didn't appear in my name manager with my other names.

Unfortunately, I've experienced this before with GD so I checked the whois, and was surprised to find it too showed both names unreg'd. Long story short, a couple of hours later I received GD's automated registration failure notice, and their standard 3 days to receive my money back statement. Now both names are showing registered and the whois seems to be updated once again.

While I realize it must have just been another glitch [similar to the couple I experienced back before the holidays]. That is three times now in roughly 90 days this has happened and all with higher quality names. Is that normal? Fortunately, this time I took screen shots of everything due to my prior experiences with this, though they serve no purpose. The screen shots, however inconsequential, were mostly to ensure I am not losing my mind or imagining things. Nonetheless, it is quite frustrating and disappointing to say the least.

Have any of you ever found or experienced any similar issues with GD or other registrars and/or Whois?

Frequent issue with GoDaddy - search the forums here for numerous past discussions of similar problems.

In the future, check the appropriate TLD registry whois directly prior to registering to check availability and/or use a registrar that has a more reliable registration system.

GoDaddy appears to frequently batch registration requests to registries - don't know why considering other registrars do real-time registration just fine.

Bottom line is GoDaddy is fine for cheap non-dropcatching registrations, transfer-ins, etc ... but for important, "must get it for sure right now" registrations, GoDaddy leaves a lot to be desired - there are better choices.

Agreed, there are probably better choices. I didn't figure the names were actually available, but had to try just in case. What was jaw dropping for me was the simple fact they were even showing as available, with no Whois info. This was not only with GD. As previously mentioned, I checked domain tools' whois search, which also showed it avail with no registrant, as did Netsol and Register in addition.

If anything, I would think it shows an error with the main domain name registry system, not with the registrars themselves. Given the top three registrars in the industry, along with one of the most widely used Whois search systems all showed the same, I'd be lying if I said there wasn't a glimmer of hope, even for just a brief moment.

Fortunately, being .INFOs it was only a temporary charge of 1.17 each, for a whopping total of 2.34 for both. Nothing earth shattering, by any means. Thanks for taking the time to reply and offer some insight. Much appreciated.
