Registrar lock implications...plz help?

I am interested in a domain name. The whois look up gives the following results (amoung other things).

----------------------------------------
Record last updated on 20-Feb-2004.
Record expires on 14-Mar-2005.
Record created on 14-Mar-2000.
Domain status: REGISTRAR-LOCK
---------------------------------------

What is the significance of registrar-lock here for me. Or more importantly will i be able to get it on 14th March or 15th March if its not renewed by its owner?

Hello mumtaz, welcome to NamePros :)

REGISTRAR-LOCK - means the name can't be transferred to another registrar unless the domain holder unlocks it. This is a security measure to help prevent domain theft. There is no concern to you. You won't be able to get the name right away though. Plan to wait a while, approx 30 days from the expiration date before it actually drops and becomes available to register.

If you really want the name, and think others may also be after it, then you can use a drop service to backorder. It will cost more, but it will increase your chances of getting it.

Good luck. :)

I have already backordered it through godaddy (even before i posted the question). But its very difficult to wait for something you really want. Anyway thanks a lot for the reply.

Like being a kid again, at Christmas time, waiting to see if Santa brought you that special present you were hoping for.

Or looking out your apartment window with binoculars towards the community swimming pool, waiting for the girls to arrive in their tiny bikinis and..... oh, well, never mind. The point has obviously been made.

Hi mumtaz.
I am active in backorders, (although this has declined a little- after you get em them you've gotta manage 'em)- anyways, one little tip that I'll share: I've found the names that are reg locked, are more apt to get renewed and, thus, won't drop. I think this may be because the people locking them, as a demographic, may be more inclined to manage and stay on top of their names, than those that don't. Can't guarantee it, but this has been my experience from "reading" thousands of domain names from my drop lists.
