Hi,

When I started out domaining over 4 years ago, I started to make friends and one of them pointed out to me that I should register my own name & surname in case I make it big in the industry.

4 years later...........I am making progress but have not yet made it big, however I keep on renewing my name.

Anyone else doing this? Does it matter to you?

Just curious what people think of doing this.

Cheers

Stu

Keep your name; otherwise someone with nefarious intentions may reg your name and ruin your reputation by posting undesirable content.

If you decide to get into another field, you will still need your name.

I have regged my full name (FirstNameMaidenNameMarriedName), FirstNameMarriedName, and FirstNameMaidenName.

It's cheap insurance.

Yes, keep your name even if you are not actively using it.
You can share usage with other family members, for example for E-mail addresses.
And of course, don't forget to mention the domain in your inheritance, so it can be passed on to your children, SO etc ;)

I hardly use mine, just for CV stuff. I don't care about the domains but if I dropped them I might regret it down the road :)

I have registered my fullname 4 years back, surprisingly, my name+surname.com gets some good traffic and earnings thru parking, digging some history and information about it, i found out that i have a similar name of one musician in spain and in mexico. I lost that name 2 years ago and now it came back to me and this time i registered it for 10 years.

Yes. It's always good to keep your name. You never know what might happen to your career in the future. It's cheap insurance.

Should register my name in the XXX extension.. might get me dates!

Seriously if I was to do this..(limited budget).. would (dot) com be the first choice?

.ca/.com/.co.uk/.de etc
.me if you blog
.tv if you vlog
,info if you just want a landing page.

It's really not all that valuable imho. It's too boring for CV / Portfolio purposes and I would recommend that you NOT put much on it actually - especially bad is publishing CV information.

I would ONLY use it for private usage or for email purposes or as a BUSINESS type page with contact information or for the obvious - a personal blog.

If you have it, renew it. If you don't then pick it up cheap. No way it's worth much in real terms.

I chose to go the option of registering my nickname and use that a little for fun (not enough so mostly personal email). My firstname/lastname is too common and would be very costly to buy (I could add middle initial I suppose)

I have my last name .tv but have yet to do anything interesting with it.

And before anyone goes too .com on you - I use a .TV for all my work related/business correspondence and I've never received any problems so the .com is an overrated issue. It gets little spam because there's not much to the page and no one would know what it means to bother with me :) I give you a business card if I care for you to contact me.

You'd be better off using BriguyDebartolo.com :)

Thanks for the advice!
my "nickname" (dot) been around as long as I have.

Been thinking, I can buy my real name and redirect/forward it to my main site..even my Google+ or LinkedIn page..

Many people use their FirstnameLastname.COM as the brand name for their business. Some examples i have seen are Law Firms, Fashion Boutiques, Meat Shop, Trucking Service, Consulting Firms, even a Hair Salon.

So getting your FirstnameLastname domain can be just a novelty item to you. But for others, they want to use their own personal names as a business brand.

Luckily I got my name last year and developed it. I would suggest everyone to register their name no matter if you don't have any current plans for it. May be in future you will have so grab it before someone else does it.

Unless of course, your parents gave you an extremely unique name.

If you have a common name, perhaps you cannot stop others from getting the domain in other extensions for their own use.

I would be willing to settle on getting the .NET version of the domain for myself if it is available for reg fee.
