Registerfly.com - CAUTION!

I have had some recent major trouble with registerfly.com and caution anyone who is using them to check your account. Here is what I've found:

Background info: Registerfly.com was formerly an Enom reseller without the enom interface. They are now an ICANN accredited registrar, and some of the domains there are still in the enom system as a reseller, and some you register lately are probably registered by them directly as an accredited registrar. As you do renewals at registerfly, if they were enom domains, they process as transfers from enom to registerfly directly instead of an enom reseller renewal.

CAUTION #1 - I've found that most domains that have gone through the transfer process in the last two months have a glitch that changes ALL the whois info to registerfly themselves. The domains are still in my account, but do no reflect my ownership or contact info.

CAUTION #2 - Some of the domains have actually had the DNS changed from my parking to their own parking DNS servers, robbing me of potential parking revenue and potenial domain sales of those who landed there.

CAUTION #3 - I found a batch of domains renewed arond June of 2005 that not only had all the whois info changed, but were not accessible from my account. As I've found them, they have moved them back into my account. However, there is a real possibility that if I hadn't found them, I would not have received renewal notices since they were not in my account list to be renewed and the emails were changed to registerfly's.

CAUTION #4 - I had one .biz domain that successfully made the transfer from enom reseller account to registerfly, but the renewal date did not get extended.

I urge anyone with domains at registerfly that have renewed in the last year,to check your whois records to see that they still list you as the registrant, and have not changed your DNS!

I still have about 25% of my portfolio there, but now intend to move them elsewhere. They have fixed most everything I've asked, but this still leaves a lot of questions as to their reliability and proper care of their database.

I am extremely disapointed since they have one of the most user friendly interfaces in the industry, too bad their back end scripts or database have so many bugs. They have a big website upgrade announced for about a week from now, that I fear will only complicate things worse. Their support also has no seemed to take these errors as being very serious. I caution other users to watch your portflios carefully to look for errors.

I cleaned out my account a few months ago, the problem I didn't like is they keep sending me renewal notices for domains that have been transfered out months ago to godaddy & enom. I don't think their system even recognizes what is still in their system. I have had no problems with enom, godaddy, namecheap, but I agree registerfly is probably to be avoided.

THANK YOU! This same thing has happened to me and many of my msn contacts!!! I lost a domain I had just received a $25 offer on, thanks to registerflys awful scripting, the domain showed I had a year left, yet it had expired. He is 100% right, register fly stinks, and probably always will. Move away from them!

A shame because Registerfly "used" to be my number one choice for domain registrations.. now, I stick to GoDaddy and NamePros almost exclusively (I did just register several .AT domains thru EuroDNS).

Thanks for the heads-up Mark.

I already moved all my domains (except a couple I'm debating whether to keep/renew) out of RegisterFly during the first part of the year because I got tired of waiting for them to get PayPal back. Month after month, promise after promise, delay after delay, it just never happened. Even to this day, I don't think it's back, is it?

I have always liked RegFly and their interface/controls very much, and I gave them a lot of business, but once they started threatening to "freeze" accounts of good customers who had always used PayPal (and never used anything else) because they quit accepting it and couldn't get it back (for whatever reason) even after 6 months, that was enough for me.

I noticed there are still many bugs in their system.
If you register a name make sure the DNs are correct and that the whois is not reflecting their default profile data instead of yours.

That is just one reason why you should not rely on reminders from your registrar.
Keep track of all your names with expiry dates and be proactive.

I agree all these bugs are truly scary. You could lose your names

Let's hope they get their act together. In the meanwhile govern yourselves accordingly :yell:

This seems to be one of their favourite means of getting extra money from customers.

They think that people won't notice their card being charged twice.

Thanks for the heads up. I'm running some checks now. A different glitch that I caught was the disappearence of a name from my renewal list. It had passed expiry by a day or so but was not among the names in the renewal group- all of which had expiration dates that had come earlier than the name that was missing and, of course, it was one of my plum, money in the bank names and a check revealed that the name had been renewed and was listed under Registerfly's Whois and on their DNS. To their credit, after I emailed them asking why the name was, conspicuously, missing from my list of renewable names and let them that it was my intention to renew, the name suddenly appeared in my account and registered through to 2007. It's still a bit of a mystery, because I don't recall paying for the renewal of the name and since my last batch of renewals w/ them, I have switched to a policy of using Paypal for 99% of my domain name transactions. I, like -db-, would have done considerably more business w/ them if they would have accepted Paypal.

Unlike some of the other posters, I have always considered them one of the better registrars. They have one of the top management interfaces, some of the best specials on the internet and their service has always been fast and efficient, if not, always the friendliest. I see someone is touting DoDaddy, which I find interesting, because they are the major registrar that I have by far had the most problems with and the only registrar that I've, really, gotten burned by. I'm, truly, disappointed in seeing this report about Registerfly and am sorry that I, now, find it necessary to reaccess my evaluation of them.

Update:

I checked my account and found EVERY domain I own there with registerfly's default whois, except the .us domains. I had used the bulk tool to try to change all whois to my data, but it backfired and changed all to their whois. Support says there is a glitch with the bulk script, but has not offered to change the whois of 700+ domains, saying the script should be fixed in a week. DON'T USE THE BULK EDIT SCRIPT!

I also asked support to give me a list of all EPP domain auth codes, so I didn't have to search for them one by one to transfer out. Basically they refused to comply with my request, saying I'll have to get them myself.

I have been a bulk customer of their since early 2001, with only a few minor problems until now. Sad to see their uncaring and lazy customer support attitude.

I've never used godaddy as a permanant registrar, because they are the only one I don't get domains for less than $7. I also don't like their transfer policies and procedure or their interface that much either. Mostly I use Fabulous, Enom, and Dotster, which I prefer in that order. Unfortunately, Fabulous doesn't do .biz or .us domains, so I can't use them as much as I'd like. Registerly was in the top four before this fiasco, just because I liked their management interface (until now).

BTW, I'm not trying to badmouth registerfly, I just think anyone currently using them should watch them very carefully after the things I've found happened lately. If you haven't had the problems...Great. However, I don't see how I could have this much trouble and others wouldn't also. Maybe they'll get them all fixed, but the attitude has not been to my satisfaction.

sorry to hear that, I moved mine out simply because of emails telling me things were expiring when they have been transfered out for months, drove me nuts, if they don't realize domains are no longer with them that's scary enough for me, good luck with wherever you move them, no problems here from enom, godaddy or namecheap and I do use the bulk feature quite a bit.
