I thought that this would be a very good question to ask because Im sure that some people have this in their head but havent had a chance to ask the question.

What income to registars earn for domain registrations? Do they get a lot because they have connections with bigger companies or what? Can they really set how much they want the domain name registration to really be?

These are just some questions I would like answered if possible. Thanks for your time, be sure to post your suggestions or opinions with the following questions in mind.

Registrars pay a fee per domain, I think its around $6 per domain. So they can charge $16 per domain and make about $10 or they can give them away for free and lose six bucks per registration.

Someone else will know what the exact fee to the registrar is, but this is just the basic idea.

Registrars pay $6 per domain to the Registry (verisign is the registry for .com & .net, pir.org is registry for .org etc etc)

$6 damn they must be making a sh*tload of money, but then again costs of maintaining the servers which wouldnt be cheap considering how good they need to be. There was a thread about this a while ago i think.

Yeah I would have to agree with insanity, they could get quite a bit of money even for having a price of $6/per domain.

They do pay to verisign and .org, thus they dont have 100% control of the prices they can charge. Also, another thing that influences prices is if they themselves are paying direct to verisign, or if they're just a massive reseller

*.no

In Norway the domains go for $56 each, a registrar pays maximum 19$. WorD?. And like, if they order many it can go as low as 7$.

Domeneshop.no sold over 869 domains in march only!!. Thats crazy, like over 20% of the market in norway, totaly there were sold 4188domains devided on only 567 registrars.

Now, thats just sick. They sold for over $48.797 that month.

Lets say they payed $19 each, that makes the cost= $16511

And lets see how much they earned, 48.797 - 16511(domaincost) = $32286 .

I BELIVE THATS CALLED GOOOD BUISNESS :0

You need to have critical mass to make any real money, registrars like registerfly, directnic, dotster(000domains, mydomain) have updwards of 1 millions names + under management so even if you are making 2.00 a name in sum 2 * 1MIL is a lot of money

And people sometimes wonder why netsol charges $34.99 a year for domain
registrations, although they're also offering complementary services. :)

I think this forum needs a spell checker.
