.tv Reg To Protect - Does Anyone Else Do This?

Every now and then I come across a name that so obviously should belong to another organisation that I want to phone them up and let them know it is available and they should get their act together and buy it - BEFORE I get too tempted. Normally I have NO interest in these names myself.

An example of what I mean is something like "PUT CHARITY ORGANISATION HERE" .TV or TV.com

A few months ago, during an epic name hunt, I had got what I wanted, but had also discovered a collection of six names that I knew were available but the 'rightful' (if that is the correct word) owner didn't know even existed.

On that occasion I sent an anonymous letter to each to let them know they were available and would soon be snapped up (I didn't say it would most likely be by some of our greedier brethren here at NamePros).

Only one group took my advice and regged the name. The rest didn't and the names are now lost to them without forking out a few dollars.

There were no trademark issues with these names.

I've just come across another similar name and am considering simply bagging the name myself and when, ultimately, I am contacted by the organisation in the future (if they ever wake up to the 21st century) I will hand it over at cost price.

What do others do when in a similar position?

I gave a politician about 1 month's notice that his .tv was still available.... then i regged it after there was no response.

There are so many TLDs at this point, most businesses probably figure it's unnecessary to register them all and can use legal means to thwart misuse.

.TV is still off the radar to the vast majority.

Good intentions can cause you many problems ....

If you reg a "protected" Brand or organization name even with the best of intentions - You can still be labeled a "Squatter".

At most - I might point out something to them , But many times its just best not to worry about other peoples Business in the long run "IMO" ;)

Update

If any leader of the Methodist church wants to get in touch, I've secured MethodistTV .com and will hand it over to them for the same price it took to purchase.

Um, i'm a methodist.....ok not really.

In this case, if I got it, I would dev it some how. The religion is generic if you will, and no one single church should own it on their own.

Too much greed in the churches these days.

hmmm, I've noticed a few domain name's that have all but the .tv regged, usally by different entities, most generics,
so, should I reg them, is the .tv version worth it ?
