OK, so I have a well known domain that I am turning into a website, all well and good, it is taking time after a copyright wrangle a few months back, but hey, I am cool about that, my own stupidity and a lesson that is now well ingrained in every fibre of my soul! It is part of the business, along with getting dumb offers from other domainers who think you will sell for registration cost + $10 (if you are lucky).
I had before starting to develop the domain had it up for sale, I even tried contacting possible end-users but got nowhere apart from talking to a receptionist who just wanted me to donate money! :o
Well earlier today I received an email from a group who I had previously emailed as one possible end-user a few months back. They wanted to know if the domain and website were still for sale. I emailed them back and said the website is not finished yet but at the right price I would consider selling it.
About 2 hours later I received another email saying that when the website is completed they would be prepared to pay $250 for the domain and website!
At first I was bemussed then I emailed them asking them to confirm their price and was this the best offer they were able to make as it fell way short of what I would even consider starting negotiations at (I hoped that the $250 actually was a mistake).
Well their reply somewhat took me aback, which takes a lot after being in this business for 3 years. Not only did they confirm the offer was correct but they reasoned the offer on the following:
Registration fees paid by you to date;
Hosting fees for the website to date;
$150 profit, which represents a 150% profit to cover website development and your labor time building the site.
Then, get this, they insist that the deal is handled via escrow with me as seller paying full escrow fees!
I replied that the site was no longer for sale to 'them'. I then received another email within 15 minutes telling me that I was stopping God's work and I will be damned for eternity! All I did was copy the Bible, it is not like I had writen it
To get this into perspective the group (organisation) making this so generous offer has an annual turnover of millions of dollars a year and the senior members live in mansions. I am just flabberghasted by the sheer nerve of these people, but more than that they actually priced my working time at well less than $1 an hour (see above)! It was as this last fact sunk in that I began getting angry at the insult, hence this rant!
God save us all (domainers) from ignorant potential end-users who think we do this for love and not money.
Sorry, just had to get this off my chest.
