actually people say it once in awhile. usually asked a little rhetorically like, 'got the gist of it?' to me it means like you understand it enough but not entirely...just learning it.

Gist is more like a slang and we Nigerians use it over here. Talk is much more preferable and comparable sales shows the difference. History never fails and that is why when I run into confuse states sometimes, I use DNpric.es to see what history has in store

Well it may be slang in Nigeria, but its an 18th century word in England.

It's an English word, not used all the time but most English speaking people would be familiar with it. I guess from a domain perspective it could work well for a end user who wants to have a :magazine/gossip/news sorta website...

I have heard the phrase, "We get the gist" in many American television shows including Friends. So, yeah it is used but not as much as the words "paraphrase", "long story short" or "idea".

" Gist " is in my vocabulary and I tend to use it as " the gist ( summary / essence) of the matter, or " I get the gist ( summary / essence) of it etc.

While I seldom use the word or hear the word used , consider " gist " a recognizable and appropriate word when spoken or written, though not a commonly used word.
