I have read that repeating words in the title bar is bad, but after searching on google it seems like websites that repeat keywords 2, 3, or 4 times in their title have the highest ranking for very competitive terms like games and etc.. Does anybody have any info on this?

there is much more to seo than what goes in the title bar, and there's a fine line between providing useful information in the title bar and keyword stuffing. the solution? test and retest. seo is an art.

Whats the best way to test? How long of a time period do you test?

make changes and see if those changes cause you to rise or fall in the serps. the time period will be as long as it takes for google to update your listing with the modified title.

It's always best to avoid over-stuffing. There's a point at which more won't help. ~2% for body content is the rule of thumb. For title, I recommend optimizing all deep pages for just 1 keyphrase, and including that keyphrase in the title + a bit of a description. Like so:

"Buy Car Insurance Online - The Complete Guide to Shopping for Car Insurance"

That's a killing title that's well optimized for the "Buy Car Insurance Online" long-tail.

That would be your rule of thumb, because there is no such rule of thumb for SEO.

I think you should write a title that will be for your site users. Repeat keywords if this will help your site's users and you should then not worry about any penalty.

Yes, keyword repeating in website content seems to be good for SEO, however not overuse keywords too much. Try the density not to exceed 5% for each phrase selected.

Use repeat keywords, a catchy and a attractive one

Take the time to develop your title tags carefully, making sure you have a good keyword foundation from which to draw and that every page has its own unique title reflecting the subject and keyword terms being optimized for. Every word in the Title should be contained somewhere in the page they are used for.

Agreed :) All rule of thumb changes from site to site. Keyword to keyword. Time to time. :D
