Question about traffic

I realize it's incredibly difficult to pinpoint, but what kind of traffic is realistically needed to make money from a website.

One of my domains has approx. 200 page impressions daily. I have a minisite up and it generates about $1-3/day. Google has practically blacklisted the domain because it recognized the minisite was an ad-driven cashgrab.

Im left to assume most of the traffic is type in, and seeing as the site doesnt look great, and no one would surf it, I think an impression is roughly a visitor, and probably unique. I have no idea where this traffic is coming from because the site developer has disappeared but left the server hosting the site, but I have no access to it.

I'd like to experiment, but right now it's a free $1-3 everyday, and if I move it, I lose the free hosting. It's a very brandable category 9letter .com and I think it has a lot of potential.

Thoughts?

A suggestion to start investigating is to add google analytics, if the site allows you to add the code. Then you can tie your analytics account to the adsense account and see exactly what is working, which pages etc. You will also see the referrals of the visitors and if they are unique.

Well you said that google put your site into penalty(i assume it's sandbox) and your traffic is direct. Then all that you can do in this case is grab more visitors by direct traffic or PPC/CPM. There is no other way left for you cause google banned/sandboxed you. Other search engines are useful in this case, you can rank higher by optimizing for them.

Relevant traffic for website is beneficial. You can get visitors by doing yahoo answers in relevant category.

Depends on what you are going after and your target for daily income. Realistically you will need something like 5000 impressions just to generate something like $10 per day but that also depends on which niche you are in.

I would use a web site copier program like httrack and then you can download a full copy of your site. If the site uses a database or has dynamic parts they would become "static", so this may or may not work well for you. But then you would have a copy of your site and can move it to a different hosting provider where you DO have access to work on your site and use the web traffic reports that should be included with your hosting.

And if you are really using free hosting, that may be why Google hates your site. You can go to hosts like Lacehost.com and get an account for $2 a month (I have 3 accounts there). Most free hosting is not worth what you pay for it... :)
