Question about redirection

Hi ,

i need your help for my issue please:

- ihave a website which is PR5
-I bought a website (busy one PR4)

i don like the name of the site i bought and i have a better one to use .

I will forward both sites to the new domain name , what will happen in this case ?

-To the PR ?
-To the links in search engine?

The final design will be similar to the PR4 site with some changes .

What will happen to the engines backlinks to the sites ?

both sites will still be registered..

is is better if i host these sites and forward them to the new domain ?

or is it better to forward them on the registrar basis ?

any idea how to manage without dropping on the SE ranks ?

I think if u just put a redirection page on ur old site whose name u dont like to forward to ur new site . Users will start coming to ur new site and most probably ur new site will get indexed also. so that might be one of the solution.

You have to use 301 redirect. That will transfer both visitors, backlinks and PageRank.

The easiest is in .htaccess:

This will transfer from old domain to new one:

Redirect 301 / http://www.newdomain.com

This will transfer from old domain a directory in new domain:

Redirect 301 / http://www.newdomain.com/newdir/

On what are you basing your statement?

Mine is based on maybe 30 advices from SEO savvy webmasters on forums, maybe 10 articles AND recommendations from GoogleGuy (Google representative).

Just by Googling for 2 min I get this:

Perhaps you meant meta refresh? Or Javascript redirection? If you did, then yes that is true. Both those methods are NOT recommended and yes maybe you could even be banned but this I don't know.

What i meant is: 301 technique is also used for redirecting the site to google and then you get that PR that google has. and therefor google has banned that technique and you get deleted if they notice it.

Yeah that is a different thing. If you 301 redirect to Google you will be sent to Google when coming to the site.

301 redirection, other than this, is the only proper way of doing it.

actually iwll be redirecting 2 sites 1 PR 5 and 1 PR 4 with around 200,000 backlinks to a totally new domain .

i hope by using the 301 redirect i can gain back all the links and PR .

it will be interesting to see the results , although i am a bit worried ....

you will not get back your link popularity, you may get it only if you redirect a single website and if it has the same thematic.
