Question about domain tasting

I had my heart set on a name today which I had backordered with Snap, but it ended up getting snagged by Enom for tasting. This might sound stupid, but can I RE-backorder the name so that if Enom drops it in a few days I have another chance at getting the name?... Or do I just have to kind of cross my fingers, make an animal sacrifice to the gods and hope and pray that I'm the first to see that it's available for registration again?...Assuming it even gets dropped again, of course.

Amy, are you sure Enom caught it for tasting purposes? Statistically speaking, a SnapNames backorder should beat out an Enom taster roughly 99.999% of the time.

If the domain's ICANN registrar reads Enom, Inc. (or one of Enom's several dozen or so partner registrars), that means someone else backordered the domain on NameJet and NJ caught it. If the registrar reads EnomXXX Incorporated, by contrast, Enom is tasting it and in 90% of cases you should be able to pick up the domain via GoDaddy backorder 3-5 days later. GoDaddy repeatedly attempts to snatch a domain up even after it becomes registered again. SN/NJ do not.

Enom is tasting domains... cross fingers and wait for a few days

I was going to say -- I'd use GoDaddy. Although once my API dropcatcher beat a GoDaddy backorder on a tasted name (which sort of made me mad, even though I ended up with the name!), so it's not guaranteed.

Ripley, GoDaddy checks domain availability at a much more sluggish pace when "re-catching" tasted domains than when initially catching pendingDelete drops. I believe GoDaddy uses more partner registrars when going about the latter, too.

It's very tough to beat GoDaddy on initial catches unless you have direct RRP access via one or more ICANN-accredited registrars, or use a public backorder service like SN/NJ/Pool.com that does.

Thanks, everyone for your help :)

Joshua - The whois registrar reads "ENOM395 INCORPORATED". I had this name backordered at Snap, and also had it picked as a "favorite" of mine over at GoDrops.com (awesome site) and it's at Godrops where I found out it's being tasted. I don't know why I didn't backorder at Godaddy too, just never even gave them a thought I guess...I usually do my backorders at NJ, Snap and Pool, but I didn't get the backorder in on time at NJ.

Godrops will alert me by email the second it drops again (if Enom lets go *lol*) but I'm scared I'll miss that email *lol*

That sounds like an Enom taster registrar. Odd that Snap missed that in favor of an Enom taster. D-:

Speaking of API, exactly what is that? I was reading something about having access to Dynadot's API if you've done more than $500 in orders with them? (I have). How do I use this to my advantage?

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing! :(

Yeah, that is odd. Could be the timing at which you placed the backorder, a SN malfunction, or the very statistically improbable taster-beating-a-backorder-service. I'd be willing to bet some software developer in Oversee.net's backroom forgot to sip his coffee this morning.

I placed my backorder with Snap at about 12:10 this afternoon. I was under the impression that you could backorder up until 2:00 with Snap.

Jingles,

I offer a product that interacts with the Dynadot API:

http://tastedrop.com/drop_catcher/

Many have had success using this tool, which you can let run for hours or days & it will automatically catch a tasted domain without your having to be in front of the computer.

Ripley, when you mentioned that your API program beat out the GoDaddy backorder, were you using my tool?

Oooh, I see this is good for tasted names :) Thank you, Expron. I'm going to take a closer look. Joshua had actually mentioned this once before to me, but I forgot about it. This could be something a little fish like me needs!

Actually, I have to correct myself, it wasn't the API tool but rather GoDrops that notified me. (Then I immediately handregged it -- so even worse!)

Dynadot's API (Application Programming Interface) essentially allows a software program to register (or attempt to register) domain names for you programatically, without any effort required on your part. NP members like Expron and I have written such software tools. This is how power-users drop-catch domains in the most inexpensive possible fashion without obtaining ICANN accreditation, and I've obtained many sweet domains this way for just $7.75. Dynadot also allows you to take advantage of the AGP (though this will change starting in April, of course).

If you have purchased more than $500-worth of domains via Dynadot, as you have (or deposited $500+ in your DD account using pre-pay) an "Upgrade to Bulk Pricing" option should appear in your control panel. Once you upgrade, you should be able to obtain an API key under the advanced settings section. Plug that API key into Expron's desktop catcher and let it pound away as you lazily watch.

I personally combined two API keys so I hit the registry twice as frequently. Some private drop-catching companies such as Zag Media use hundreds of Dynadot API keys.

Update: Wow, people are fast. In the time it took me to write my response, like 5 others had already appeared! I'm growing old.

Thanks Joshua, you always do such a thorough explanation and I appreciate that :)

Actually I had this particular name backordered at both Snap AND Pool...and yet somehow that sneaky Enom taster ended up with it.

Good Luck Jingles, hope this thread is updated after you acquire the domain in a few days!

If I'm not mistaken, ENOMXXX tasters usually drop their inventory around 7:30 - 8:30PM CST time zone ;)

If you need any help, just let me know.
