Pushing procedure questions?

1. I understand that a any registrar does not charge for a push if it is done from one inside account to another inside account. Is this correct?

2. But when pushing a domain from one registrar to another, it is basically considered a transfer and therefore the receiving party will incur the transfer fee, correct?

3. So is this the procedure one must use to "push" to another registrar...

- Assuming the domain is locked, seller waits for payment.

- Once payment is received, seller unlocks domain and changes the admin info.

- Then, buyer initiates a transfer request to receive the domain in his account.

- "Losing" registrar contacts seller for approval once they receive the transfer request from the buyer's registrar (the gaining registrar). Seller approves the transfer and the domain is taken from seller's account and transferred to the buyer's account.

Is this all correct?

I could not find a sticky or any threads outlining the procedure so sorry if I am posting something that has been posted many other times. A link to the proper thread would be appreciated.

1. Most don't these days. Correct.

2. Generally a push is only at the same registrar. Moving betweens registrars is a transfer, in which the owner pays for another year or more of registration at the new registrar in the course of the transfer.

I recommend ALWAYS do an ownership transfer at the existing registrar first. IF the buyer wants a different registrar, they should initiate the transfer themselves only once they have full control and the name is solely in their possession with the whois reflecting their contact info. Authorizing a transfer to a buyer is an invitation for losing control of the domain. (See recent discussion in this thread: http://www.namepros.com/showthread.php?t=66148)

3. Not recommended. If the email address is wrong it won't go through. If someone else initiates the transfer, you could approve it going to the wrong person. If a registrar error happens, you have no control to help, and they don't have the domain delivered...You're up a creek.

Thanks. So you are saying that it is best for the buyer to open up a free buyer account at MY registrar so I can push it to his account, which will be fee free for both of us and has less if any chance of loss of domain from fraud or technical problems.

Thank you for the explanation. Someone really should make this or another thread about this a stick as I think it is very importanat info for all newbies. IMO

Yes, that's my recommendation. In some cases, I create the account, push the domain into it, and email them the account name and password with instructions to change the password if correct.

It only takes a misspelled email address and a forgotten password to lose control. Most password recovery programs require it be sent to the email listed. Some registrars require notarized letters to straighten out lost control, and you have even more trouble if near expiration and support is slow.
