Pure & Thumbs??

Ok, I have a question that I haven't been able
to find a satisfactory answer too, well 2 questions
actually...

1) I have noticed when I upload through smartftp
that on certain sites I am uploading to, my ftp tells
me it detected PUREftp I have never installed this
-at least that I know of- I have to login to WHM and
access file manager to remove it first, then remove it
from the smartftp.
I have also recently changed
to FileZilla to see if this would correct the problem,
but low and behold, it is showing in my newly created site
files - (is it coming in the scripts I'm using?)
shows on the ftp part now as being uploaded. but not in my
site files, or in file manager!
WHAT IS IT! and how do I stop it from getting in there!

2) and what in the world is Thumbs.db? I have noticed this
attached to some emails from outlook (even when I don't send
an attachment)

I had or still have a cache problem, and it all started around the
time I noticed thumbs!

Anyone know what these are, how to get rid of them, and are they harmful?

Thanks for your help!

I also meant to mention, when I disabled cacheing -
reason for that is I was crashing alot, but I am still
crashing - just the current program I am in - whether
it's ftp or dream weaver or browser (ie7 or ff) - but in IE7 when ever I highlight to copy,
the browser crashes...not sure if their all combined, but
thought I should mention it anyways...
Thanks

PureFTP looks like it's installed by default by your host - homepage.

thumbs.db is a Windows system file, when you have the thumbnail view selected when viewing a Windows folder, it records every image thumbnail to the file thumbs.db so it doesn't have to read the same image file again next time to make the same thumbnail.

It can be disabled by clicking "My Computer" on the desktop and choosing C:\, then select Tools, then Folder Options, then View and then finally by ticking "Do not cache thumbnails".

As far as I know thumbs.db isn't harmful, it's just a system file. I have no idea how it's attaching to your Outlook emails though.

That's as far as my knowledge goes on both subjects, hope it helps. :)

Thanks Rob, Yes it helps immensely... :)
Definetly helps with the ftp :)
Question about the cache....
Would disabeling the cache, which I may have done already, I know I did in dreamweaver, now I get (sometimes) cannot cache celiac.dsw or
something like that. causes my system (browser or whatever
open program I am in at the time) to crash when I right click to copy?
memory issues? only had 2 hard crashes that went to blue screens
but both referenced cache/memory issues. (and I have lots of room)

I was thinking it was an IE6 issue, so moved up to IE7
and still the same, now FF is doing it also??..
(I hate being a noob!) (nicest word I could call myself ATM)

Strange events you have going on here Wendy...the thumbs.db file acting up and other things you explained could maybe be the cause of a Trojan/Rootkit which is interfering with your system.

To be on the safe side i would format your whole computer if i where you.
Save the important stuff and install everything new.
That's the only way to be sure your system is clean unless you're like Joanna Rutkowska who is an expert on this matter.

Be safe do a format ;)

Thanks Ed, I know, nothing's simple in my world of computers...
I was thinking about the re-format as well, unfortunately that
is when all the problems started (after my hard drive crash in September)
installed a new hard drive, but I think the guy that did it, made a mistake.
It's not even close to what it used to run like....
Guess I need to take it in somewhere :(
I have done lots of scans, but all comes back clean...
Thanks to both of you for your help....

Which version of windows are you running?

If you've got XP, download the program at the bottom of this page - LINK - and run the .exe file.
If you're running Windows 98 or similar, it's more likely to just be bugs in the operating system.

After that, download the program called HijackThis from here and run a scan. Copy the results and post them here. If you've got a virus/trojan/some other nasty, it'll be shown in there.

Other than that, I have no idea what could be causing those problems. Hopefully those 2 scans will find something, an explanation anyway, and you can remove whatever it is.

and post the results here, I forgot about the hijackthis thingee..

I tried to rep you but it says I need to spread the rep around!

:) No problem.

I hope it finds an explanation, otherwise it's back to the drawing board.

I am, but not purposefully. My sleep is messed up, auction's in 3 hours and I'm not tired yet. :)

I have a couple listed at #12 so I'll probably hang around until at least then.
You gonna be there..... in a buying mood?! ;)
