Protest as Facebook removes breastfeeding photos

A mass online protest movement is gathering pace after Facebook banned some breastfeeding photos from the social network site.

Angry mothers even picketed the Facebook headquarters in Palo Alto, California, in a live "nurse-in" to complain about a ban on photos of mothers suckling their children that exposed too much of the mother's breast. Hundreds of women have had their pictures removed without warning and have been informed that they may be barred from using the site.

It pisses me off that breastfeeding is even thought to be controversial. As the husband of a breastfeeding mother, it bothers me every time my wife has to say, "is it OK if I feed my baby here?"

Hello, it's a boob! You've seen one, you've seen them all is my opinion

I think Facebook should be more sensitive to nursing mothers but nursing mothers also need to recognize that Facebook is not only international but also has children as members. If the photo is tastefully done, then it should stay. If it is more about the boob than the baby, then there is no inherent right to post boob shots just because a baby happens to share the spotlight.

I rspectfully disagree with you. It's just not kosher to whip out a breast and feed your child sometimes.

If I'm at a restaurant or in a shopping center...I don't won't to see it. Do it discreetly if you must, but don't subject other people to what YOU think is YOUR right.

And for anyone that thinks I'm being wierd or don't know what I'm talking about, I have four children...and my wife never whipped out her boobs in public.

Yeah, I agree. Not all boob pictures can't be seen as bad :hehe:

I gotta agree with you. If I were eating in a restraunt and seen something like this my stomach would be turned instantly. keep it private.

I could see someone on facebook thinking "Hey if i show my woman breast feeding they would never take off the pics" "Lets see how far we can take it" I am sure the tastefully (pund intended lol) done pics where not removed.

Yeah that was more my impression as well. I guess they have to draw the line somewhere or people will just keep pushing it. I'm sure many have perfectly good intentions but a few bad apples wanting publicity ruin it for everyone else.

It is the problem in the eye of the the person who sees breastfeeding in that manner.

Everyone of us has been breastfed.

It is the most natural thing and that is the most holiest relationship of a mother and a child.

What does it costs us if some mother wants to feed her baby. Her baby is still innocent and doesn't understands that this is a public place. So the baby will keep crying.

I still agree that if done in private it is good. But if there is no option at all then maybe others will also understand.

I totally agree with that from their point of view...could lead to worse and they are probably just covering themselves.

Sex, urinating and defecating are natural acts as well...not allowed in public though. An extreme comparison to be sure but you did mention natural acts and as gross as they may seem, all essential for exsistence.

Hardly an issue when you can express milk from a breast into a bottle and be prepared for such occasion.

But why you are only quoting half of the things I wrote.

Quote it full.

Quoting half of the things have different meaning and quoting the full post has a different meaning.

You're right...I did'nt quote this part simply because I gave you an option. Get a breast pump and make sure you have a couple of bottles for such an occasion.

Once you have a child, as most of you may already know, your life becomes prioritized around their needs...not yours. If you want to take your infant out of it's comfort zone...be prepared. Just don't expect all people to accept what you think as acceptable and think that you are not encroaching on their comfort zone.

Yeah so next time I see an infant crying for getting breast fed should I just go and kick that infant and tell to just shut up?

Or should I mind my own business and just go away from there.

Should I think that the mom trying to feed her baby is just doing it for showing me what she got?

Or should I give her a benefit of dumbness and think okay she is dumb she forgot the bottle now what. :(

lol....be prepared..say what you want, you're are going to anyway.

As for kicking an infant and telling it to shut up....well that is quite possibly the dumbest retort I have ever heard.

Get a better argument....there are options available.

BTW...nothing personal Nick...JMHO.

For those that think it's ok to breastfeed in public... I'm curious. If I were at your house and asked your wife to show me her breasts, would she do it? And would you approve?

If you answered "no" to either of those questions then you already know why lots of people think it's improper for women to bare their breasts in public, for whatever reason.

And the "it's a natural bodily function" argument isn't sound either. People don't like seeing others fart, burp, pee, or what have you in public either. Sure, breastfeeding is a WAY more appealing, but still just because it's natural doesn't mean it should be public.

I also think that if allowed on Facebook, it's only a matter of time before someone pushes the envelope. It's downhill after that. Sad but true I think.

You don't even know what the F you are talking about.

I already mentioned it is in the eye of the person who sees it.

How is coming to one's house and asking his wife to show breasts related to a mother who is going to breast feed her baby.

The mother who is breastfeeding her baby is doing it for the sake of her baby not to show her breasts off.

((

Freedom of speech is the freedom to speak freely without censorship or limitation. The synonymous term freedom of expression is sometimes used to denote not only freedom of verbal speech but any act of seeking, receiving and imparting information or ideas, regardless of the medium used. Freedom of speech and freedom of expression is closely related to, yet distinct from, the concept of freedom of thought or freedom of conscience. In practice, the right to freedom of speech is not absolute in any country and the right is commonly subject to limitations, such as on "hate speech". This is because exercising freedom of speech always takes place within a context of competing values" -

as per wikipedia And this is what I have understood till date.

Also,

((

Attitudes toward breastfeeding in public vary around the world. Babies need to be fed frequently. A mother may find herself in a public place at the time her baby needs feeding. Depending on the location in the world, it may or may not be socially acceptable to breastfeed in public. In many parts of the developing world, breastfeeding in public is socially acceptable and uncontroversial. In the industrialized world, however, breastfeeding in public is infrequent due to societal attitudes about indecent exposure and dress code.

A baby's need to feed cannot be reliably predicted, so legal and social rules about indecent exposure and dress code are often adapted to meet this need.[1] Many laws around the world make public breastfeeding legal and disallow companies from prohibiting it in the workplace, but some people are uncomfortable with seeing a mother breastfeed her baby.[2] Some breastfeeding mothers feel reluctant to breastfeed in public.
