privacy protection is not a necessary feature

privacy protection is free (for the first year) when you buy 5+ more domains at godaddy, otherwise it is rather expensive

Some registrars offering free it free with every domain.

You don't need hosting/emails/etc to just register a domain (i guess you are talking about godaddy checkout process:'( )

It is a waste of money IMO. The great part about not using it? You may get a call from an end user inquiring about one of your names, I have, And that is a good thing :)

what is good about anybody can call you and ask (or harass) you about domain? Leave negotiation to emails. If you don't use privacy, the next best things is one of those free or paid voicemail numbers.

I remember I had some difficulties at GoDaddy when canceling those free privacy protections by the time of domain renewal. So I personally stay away from that option unless I think I absolutely need it for a specific domain.

It really depends on your plans for the domain/website and whether you care people can find out where you live.

For example, thinking of starting something that tends to stir up emotions like a political blog? Then I would say absolutely yes to privacy or getting yourself a business po box address.

There are alot of nut-jobs out there.

I have never been harassed by a phone call regarding a domain name, I have sold to end users though. Many don't have time for back and forth negations via email. I have found in many cases when selling to end user, That a phone conversation not only seals the deal, But also gives the buyer reassurance that all is on the up and up.

It Depends!

If you are buying 1 domain for a blog or personal website, then Privacy would be important. There are scripts that go through the Whois database mining contact info.

If you want to get into domaining, then Privacy is not important. A lot of serious domainers use a PO Box, Google Voice number, and a business email for Whois contact info.

It is best to go with registrar that offers Privacy Free.

Those extras are not useful and it is much better to keep hosting separate from a registrar btw.

Sedo doesn't offer whois privacy protection as they are not a registrar.

If you mean protection by buying a domain from Sedo and not knowing who the owner is, that is true to some extent, but after the purchase, the sedo contract does show the buyer/seller info.

Privacy protection ultimately depends upon the registrant. It is an optional feature just like the other addons. Privacy protection will simply mask your personal contact info from the whois record of a domain name. Some people who register names choose to keep their mailing address, email, and phone number private. When privacy protection is activated, the contact info of a 3rd party service is inserted in the whois record and anyone who tries to contact you will be able to do so through the methods provided by the 3rd party service.

GoDaddy doesn't offer the free PP for over 5 domains registered at the same time. Newbie question: IF I want to sell my domain WHY would I put PP on it. I want my name to show up in WHOIS to prove I am the owner, don't I?
