I have a single word .xyz that has:
  • Global search volume of 75,000/month (the word's search volume, not volume for the site)
  • U.S. search volume of 40,500/month
  • (edit) registered in 30 extensions
  • CPC $0.06
The valuation of the domain is low on appraisal sites but, based on search volume alone, it should be fairly valuable in the real world. It's not a very commonly used word but it does have to do with personal property which I think only adds more value.

I've browsed around on some of the posts regarding pricing and recent sales of .xyz and I'm even more confused. The numbers seem to be all over the place without much mention of keyword search volume and price structuring.

How much would y'all say is a fair retail price for the domain?

lol, real helpful... heh.

Clearly, I'm new to the industry and asking for explanation because I'm confused. Why not give some pointers?

Why is high search volume bad for purchasing a quality word? some of the .xyz sale prices I've seen are pretty high for single words with similar search volumes... A lot of the veterans I've seen posting around mention the appraisals aren't accurate realistically anyway?

Your question is complex and requires you to read up on SEO, focusing on monthly searches... and then second part is reading up on TLDs.

The Tl;Dr is that 75k is nothing. And .XYZ is trash. When you combine both factors, we're all hoping you paid that $0.50 promo for that .XYZ :D :tightlyclosedeyes:

It's not really complex... as an advertiser myself, high search volume and low cpcs are what we love...

I'm asking about why you mentioned monthly searches has little to do with the value of the domain in question...

Welp! If u disagree / ignored what I tried to explain, it's time for you to read up & research before you waste more money on domains just like how 99% of us did...

I'm not disagreeing  I'm literally asking you to clarify why .xyz is garbage to you. Plus, you implied that search volume means nothing in your first reply but then told me to read up on SEO and monthly searches later...

I don't understand why search volume means nothing to you when you later tell me to learn more about SEO... SEO is literally about optimizing for organic traffic... In my mind, the keyword making up the domain name has a high search volume and low cpc which makes it great for SEO. I'm literally trying to understand why you say that's a bad thing to do and your replies have just been fairly vague...

If you plan on reselling the name, ignore all that cpc, search volume stuff, end-users will buy the name if they like it, they wont care about all the stats.

Stay away from .xyz and the other gtlds, focus on .com and extension that have a proven track record, especially when new to the industry. Get some sales under your belt. Read this forum for a few months, get to understand domain value before buying names. Check out DNJournal and Namebio to see what type of names sell.

Companies just arent interested in extensions like .xyz, you will find most of them have never even heard of it.

Good luck

.xyz is hard to sell.

I have a couple dozen LLL .xyz domains, meaning three-letter domain names, but even there I'm not sure if all of them sell. It's a risky extension. Google tried to promote it a few years ago, but nothing came of it. People occasionally buy it for their personal blog names, ie Sarah.xyz, Tom.xyz. But I think they only do this because first names are in too much demand in other extensions.

You'll learn quickly what works and doesn't. Once I actually got deep into reading blogs and watching domaining videos a few months ago I finally started to understand domaining. Previously I was just throwing dice, and expecting too much for bad names.

Rule of thumb, .com are the king of domains. What comes next is disputed, but .net and .org are still preferred. Then you have popular ccTLDs like .co.uk, .tv, io, and .co

Everything beyond that is increasingly a crapshoot. There are exceptions of course, but they are few and far between.
