How exactly does one define a premium domin? Is it a domain in a certain format, that sticks to certain rules, or that fetches a certain value? Or do other things come into it?

Hope this hasn't alredy been posted, if so, I appologise :)

I'm pretty sure it's already been posted, lsw!
But it can be hard to find info in amongst the nearly 2 million posts on here, so I'll bite.

I'm sure someone more senior will post a better response than me shortly, but here goes anyway:

Some premium factors:

extension - .com is worth more than .info for example
characters - aaa.com is worth more than QZX (probably!)
generic - non trademarked, meaningful, one maybe 2 words

Maybe check out the price guides on 3Character.com

Thanks again - I'm just starting out in the domain game, so just trying to get a feel for everything - lots of reading :)

true premium domains are generally very expensive- while some people have their own scoring systems, and will tell you "their" version of premium- the general domainer audience will see names like News.com, Business.com, Homes.com as true generic premiums.
then things tier down, and also teir down in pricing- but true premiums are way mucho dinero

The definition of Premium:

preยทmiยทum:
...
n.
An unusual or high value: Employers put a premium on honesty and hard work.
adj.
Of superior quality or value: premium gasoline.

In theory, I guess any domain that would sell well above reg fee could be called premium. there really is no defined definition in the domain industry. A premium .com might be 4-7 figures. A premium .cc might be $200. Premium is really not a fixed value, but more of a comparative value.
