For snail mail? Easy e-mail?

I'd be curious to see what one could do with a .post domain.

Ugh.

Personally, I like the idea of different organizations getting their own extensions.

Oh, I see. Sort of like the .edu TLD in that it will be restricted. From what I could glean, each city could apply for its domain, then distribute subdomains to its citizens and organizations, who would first have to prove that they are trustworthy.

What happens if one moves to another city?

Very strange.

If you look at the state of industry-specific TLDs such as .museum .aero .coop etc the future does not look bright for .post. We can already start digging the grave :ghost:

PS: when will people ever learn...

You guys aren't seeing the big picture here. This isn't a lame attempt for the creation of some industry-specific TLD by a long shot and it has nothing to do with domaining in the traditional sense. This is basically the beginning workings of a massive global effort for postal services all over the world to try to start charging for email. It's no news that the Internet has essentially taken a MASSIVE chunk out of the post office revenues, due to the fact that you can now send pretty much anything over the net for free, barring actual package deliveries. And even a lot of the things that required package deliveries in the past can now be downloaded over the net. (i.e. CDs, DVDs, Video Games, Books, etc).

The .post TLD is a way for the post offices to try to start making money from secure, online email delivery.

It will work like this:

1. Post offices all over the world will get a .post domain.
2. Government officials will get email addresses from their local postoffice.post.
3. Post offices will start pushing this secure email framework to businesses.
4. Post offices will start pushing this secure email framework to individuals.

Some things to note:

It's the post office, so they have unlimited advertising capabilities. They can send direct mailings to your door for free and they're all subsidized by governments so they can probably afford major advertising campaigns. They're going to try to push businesses into their framework, because it will be secure. The TLD will be locked down, everything will use secure certificates, and every party will be verified, they'll probably require photo ID for individuals to activate their FREE post office email account. They'll probably come out with some advertising campaign that plays on the imagery that your .post email address is like your "second home."

The idea is that businesses will buy into it, because everything can be verified secure. Businesses like security. There's also the fact that businesses spend tons of money every year on direct mail advertising. Wouldn't it be nice if, as a business, you could cut down on mailing costs (i.e. paper, printing, envelopes, etc) and just send a secure, digital version that will always go to the correct person, regardless if their address has changed? You don't have to worry about your customer information being outdated, because that customer will always have the same .post address. No more wasting money sending direct mailings to incorrect addresses. If the customer moves to a different city, their email will be forwarded in the backend from their old city address to their new city address. Everyone will probably have a unique routing ID, so domain structure will mostly just be for show and can easily be manipulated through redirects.

There is also the fact that "SPAM" doesn't exist in the world of the post office. AOL was notorious for taking advantage of that loophole. Since this TLD will be setup and run exclusively by the post office, and since they would be directly profiting from businesses who are paying them money in order to send secure emails with verified delivery (and probably the ability to verify whether the person opened the email or not), it's not a far stretch to imagine that businesses will LOVE this crap.

They'll probably also push businesses to require their customers to use a .post email address for everything, such as online bill payments and ordering from online stores. It's all secure and verifiable and would considerably cut down on fraud.

I know this all may sound completely fantastic or insane... But why the hell else would they want to create a .post TLD?

Lol, at least that's what I would do if I ran the post office. ;)

The future is TLDs for all. Look out for .google, .microsoft (brands) and .nyc, .chicago (major cities), they're next. Then more.

I just did some investigating at the UPU site and they actually have a PDF file that confirms pretty much everything I claimed in my previous post.

Universal Postal Union > What we do >> .post

Click on the UPU e-services strategy PDF if you are at all interested.

Basically, they're creating a secure digital framework for the Internet. Credit card companies will adopt this. Your credit cards will be linked to your unique .post email address, which will have it's own secure, digital certificate. This will cut down tremendously on online identity theft and fraud, so there is absolutely no reason that financial institutions like banks and credit card companies would not adopt this. Once they are in, big businesses get involved. Plus their proposed e-service offerings for businesses reads pretty much word for word what I said. Long term customer tracking and cost-effective direct marketing (spam), as well as secure digital transactions.

Seriously people, this is the first I'm hearing about this and I feel like I just discovered who killed Kennedy. I feel like I should alert someone, or write my congressmen... lol This is going to have a massive impact on the future of the Internet as we know it.

*** Threw this up on my blog and Dugg it. If anyone actually reads this post and the PDF and thinks this is something people should be aware of, help me get the word out by Digging it. http://digg.com/d31CbfM

From what I understand, .post will NOT be a domainer's or registrar's cash cow. For one thing, it looks as though personal domains will actually be subdomains of citycountry.post or even city.country.post, not exactly a domainer's paradise.

I suspect that there will be very strict rules regarding registration and that people will be allowed to register one domain per person (thus, no aftermarket possibilities, and that could actually be part of TOS). I suspect that registering a .post will involve a trip to the post office, with ID in hand.

I do think there is room for such a TLD, one that does instill trust for users and businesses. I would register ONE .post domain, but no more than that. Of course, there are always those who seem to get around the rules, so it wouldn't be totally foolproof.

Not all TLDs should be about money for domainers.

By the way, I first heard about .post over two years ago on the Domain Tools blog, when Jay Westerdahl talked about such a possibility for the postal system. (I think he was just daydreaming about such a possibility. He thought it would be cool to use a domain as an address on snail mail).

My observation is that TLDs that have limitations/restrictions and involve vetting of the requesting entity are not very popular eg. .pro (in the past), .jobs, .travel (in the past), .museum (RIP).

It isn't about popularity or whether or not it will be a cash cow... The UPU is a specialized branch of the United Nations. They are trying to use .post to create a secure email framework so they can essentially control all secure communications on the Internet and charge you for email... This goes above and beyond our simple interests as domainers.

I don't see the problems, don't forget that the E-mail accounts you have now are not free either,
it's all part of the contract you have with your Internet Provider. And if they offer more
security there maybe a market for it.
