Once my site is indexed by a search engine, is it automatically placed in the search results on the appropriate page? Or does it take time for the search engine to figure out which page the site belongs on?

E.g., it took me a week to MSN to index boat-loan.info (it was only indexed this morning). I know it's there because when I do a search for this domain name, MSN returns the name of the website as well as its description. However, I cannot find my site on the first 10 pages of MSN when I do a search for "boat loan". Does it take time for MSN to figure out what page the site should be placed on after indexing?

Thanks,
George

Well, there are few things that go into this.
One, a site being indexed and then being shown as a result for relavant search terms.

The first thing, getting indexed is a not difficult thing. Especially MSN SE indexes sites very fast. For google to index the site, the site has to be optimized and designed properly with good amount of content. Yahoo always takes long time to index and yahoo is a different story.

Now, showing your site as a result for relavant search terms. It is the difficult part for any webmaster to reach page 1 on any results. If you site has good content, good Pagerank and good number of backlinks, then chances are there for your site to appear in results in starting pages.

That said, it takes more optimization (known as "Search Engine Optimization - SEO") for any site to come up on the first page or even the second page of search results.

Good luck with your site,
