Hi all,

I run a web design company here in ohio. For the longest time I have stuck by not wanting to provide hosting to my cusotmers because i felt that it would place some sort of dis-quality on the web design side of things. However recently my thoguhts have changed on this.

I want to provide my own shared hosting via a dedicated server through a hosting company, but i dont want to pay more than $50/mo and i want the server to be very reliable and provide lots of bandwidth, disk space, etc.

I am currently using a small-tie reseller plan to host about 30 of my websites but i am breaking the barrier in means of traffic and need to seek better hosting

If my hopes on pricing etc are far fetched at all, please let me know.

If somebody could provide a few good references for this, i would very much appreciate it!

Thanks Alot

A dedicated server for $50/mo is really pushing it. If what you want is a quality server with great uptime, lots of space, and bandwidth. Well then you won't find that for $50/mo. Most dedicated servers are between $100-300. So to find a quality server under $100/mo is almost impossible to find.

Hoped that help.

Yeah, Nick is right, Dedicated servers are usually $99/mth minimum in most decent places I've seen

You can also get super-sized resellers if that's more appropriate

I can only concur with what the other two have said $50 is not the most realistic budget. It however is not absolutely impossible, just very difficult and likely that you will have to sacrifice a few things (whether its service quality, uptime, security, bandwidth, disk space, so on) . Out of curiosity, how much do you actually require in terms of disk space and bandwidth?

You might look at a VPS for that price but a dedicated box is out of the question. Double your budget and then you can find some decent boxes to suit your needs. I also have another question for you.

Do you know how to admin a server before you go jumping in over your head? I don't want to seem rude or anything but this is something to consider for your clients otherwise you can get yourself into trouble quickly and really give your service a bad name. My recommendation if you cannot expand your budget is just to pick up another reseller account.

Yes $50 for a dedicated isn't very theisable-- for that price its going to be pretty bad. I'd suggest getting a VPS or reseller to match your needs.

I see your points on the price, that is flexible in return for a quality host.

I just need a host that i can rely on and have at least 90% uptime and any server problems that may happen, i want quick fixes, etc, reliablility and affordability is my most important goal.

I have a budget of about $120 monthly for this, however i will not be needing it until about a month from now

If you could provide several links to hosting companies that you know are descent from experience or referral, i would really appreciate it

as for the required disk spcae, i need at least 100gb of disk space, and i need at least 1000gb of monthly allowed bandwidth

Wow-- you're going to want a dedicated for sure then. I know a deal that could meet your needs, but you have to prepay for 3 months (totals to over 300). If you're interested pm me for info. Otherthan that, usually its pricey for a server w/ that big of an hd imo.

Hi,

I've used Heart Internets reseller package which is about ยฃ35 a month. They offer unlimited bandwidth, diskspace, and domain hosting.

Its obviously meant as a reseller package but I just use it for my own sites. Their support is FAST (they often email me back within 2 minutes) and I've had no problems with them so far (been using them for a year now).

I was with host department but they were just too unreliable. I can honestly say that as long as I've been with Heart Internet I've never seen any of my sites offline or load slowly (its quite weird really).

Their site is heartinternet.co.uk (and no, I'm not an affiliate)

Have a read up and see if its suits you.

One thing I must mention is their control panel is a bit rubbish but once you find your way around its ok :)

You could get one for a $100 NP. Take a look at ResellerWorkz.com or Hivelocity.net.

Chilli Con Carnage: I'd stick away from unlimited space/bandwidth packages-- think about it, its just not possible, and on top of that overselling is inevitable.

I agree with cyberoptik. Unlimited does not exist, period.

What you need to do is charge your customers like $20-30 minimum for hosting per month. People around here probably think that is rediculous, and they are the same people who are not making money. Turn locally and people will have no problem paying a few hundred dollars or more for a website and then $20-50 or even $100 a month, its not that big of a deal to companies. Then you can get a $300/mo server with dual processors, a lot of bandwidth, etc.

In terms of $50/mo, you may be able to get a VPS if you are lucky. Even celerons with half a gig of ram go for $99/mo easy.

very good points made, I personally over the last 2 years have targeted the local market and I don't need to compete with everyone offering way too cheap packages. I can easily charge 1.50-2.00 per GB if not more with no worries. The best part about this is you can make the same amount of profit with 10 customers that the cheap guy has to have 30 to make.
