Depends on the domain but it is usually more of a preference. Better, be something special to be worth high renewal.

There are some non-coms which do not have exorbitant “premium” renewals.

When you see the words:

Sav has nothing to do with this even though i am not the biggest fan of Sav, and you won it in Sav.

"Premium renewals" are for premium assets and should be done only on a case by case basis, for example 3L .xyz drops are premium renewals. It's a standard practice for some to be premium. The question is how do you decide which premium domain renewals to buy? If you have any doubt if it's worth the premium fee than simply don't buy it.
