Please help on mod-rewriting

Hi guyz, how do i mod rewrite the entire site:
http://rate-my-pic.ratemypic.in/index.php

so that the members profile will automatically look like

http://ratemypic.in/suthra

instead of

http://rate-my-pic.ratemypic.in/ind...username=suthra

and also the other links in the site.

Kindly help

Any help is grately appreciated.

I have a 301 redirect from my domain ratemypic.in to the subdomain rate-my-pic.ratemypic.in

Im not to familiar with mod_rewrite, but this helped me when I needed to use it:

+ the server must have mod_rewrite installed .

check by: create a new php file with the content:

phpinfo();
?>

visit the page.
and search for mod_rewrite if you cant find it, you cant use it

Mines is Modrewrite enabled.

The URL structure comes like this:

rate-my-pic.ratemypic.in/index.php?cmd=20&username=suthra

rate-my-pic is a subdomain of ratemypic.in and when anyone types ratemypic.in , it automatically redirects to the subdomain which has seperate FTP access.

Should i put that code in .htaccess of ratemypic.in (or) in the .htacess of rate-my-pic.ratemypic.in
