As a newbie, If I'm interested in registering a domain name today, and subsequently selling within a few days, is this rule the stardard with all domain transfers:

According to Go Daddy, the following regulations apply:

"ICANN regulations prohibit transferring a domain name that has been registered or previously transferred within the last 60 days".

If this is true, then generally how are domain sales managed? Is this just an undstood rule with the buyer? Please advise. Thanks.

Despite that you can't transfer the domain name out from Godaddy (during the 60 days period) you can still sell it to someone and "push" it for free to his/her Godaddy account.

This applies to all registrars and resellers.

edit: ...or at least to most of them

You have to wait the 60 days

No, that is not true. The Verisign .com registry will not permit registrar transfers in the first sixty days after initial registration. Godaddy prevents registrant transfers for sixty days for any reason, and they have been lying about it being an ICANN rule for a long time.

godaddy also applies some additional rule of waiting 60 days on internal transfers. Would never recoommend them

That's not true. I register names practically every day on GoDaddy.com, and sell them days later to another GoDaddy account.

Most registrars don't allow transferring a domain to another registrar within 60 days.

HUH?
I do it all the time...
Buy a name one day...sell it a few days later...
espllc....the operative terms here are transfer & push..
Transfers to a new owner requires 60 days from registration or most recent change of ownership..
Push is simply pushing the name to another account holders accout...but in effect a change of ownership.
Not being a legal eagle I don't know all of the ICANN legalities GD claims with them.
I do know that I have done many pushes & changes of ownership painlessly & without problems with GoDaddy.
I also believe that the 60 days is a protection from someone getting a name from you & cancelling payment after transferring it away to another registrar...That is a real nightmare...
GD is also not the only registrar that has 60 day transfer rule.
These are just my own experiences.
Hope this helps...
Jim
