The FIFA™ in each year of the World Cup™ gets a trademark for World Cup follow by that year. This is how I understand it. Your other problem is time. Your going to have to reg them each year for probably 7 years. And finally quaility, an info, a mobi and a very bad .com. This is a total loser when you add all three. -100 USD

Refund, Credit, do it now if you can

Hey thanks for the advice, the only reason i purchased theese particular domains was becuase ive seen a number of similar domains going for large figures

http://flippa.com/auctions/108348/Olympic-Games-2012-Absolute-massive-earning-potential

ive seen a couple more but for a smaller fraction of that sale...

you think that child (seller's advatar) really going to get 45k for that? Wait for the dust to settle on this. And if it turns out to be true its lightnighting striking that wont happen twice.

Maybe its the old thinking $45.000 is $45.00 not $45,000

thanks once more, but i have seen around about 15 or so olympic games domains sell in the past 3-4 months, while i have seen a larger number unsold most of them were not as keyword rich as these ones. The majority of the sales were for medium 3 figures and even some for larger 4 figure sums... i find it hard to believe that these where all one off sales?

may i ask how much you would value lets say olympicgames2012.info for?

Thanks again!

sounds like your trying to convince yourself to hold them....trademark domains dont last....let them expire or sell on ebay

hey, im not trying to convince myself to hold them, there cost was insignificant. I rarely buy domains on there own and appreciate the trademark issue, but I have been watching flippa for a substantial time and there is definitely a market for domains even if they have a trademark in them...

is there anyone who has any experience in the resale of domains like this?

thanks again for your constructive reply's...

Anything with the word "olympic" in it is a trademark and the IOC are very aggresive it when it comes to protecting their TM. Dont register names like this unless you are looking for a lawsuit. I lot of the sales you have seen are probably fake sales, it happens every day. Go and have a look at Namebio.com to get a better feel for what type of names sell. There a few small "olympic" sales but those prices are really not worth a lawsuit or the reputation you will get from other domainers on these forums, this type of activity doesnt usually sit well with people here.

The other names are worth nothing, sorry..

Dont every believe stuff like this, I mean how many sites do you go to that have 1 hyphen, never mind 2

If you arent sure put the name up here on namepros for an appraisal, thats your best appraisal. Use a registrar that will allow you to grace delete if possible, so you can get a refund if the appraisal is bad

good luck

Olympic Names

Hi,
Just an aside, the words Olympic(s), Olympian(s) or Olypmiad(s) & similiar for the Paralympics are only 'protected' words, these words cannot be copyrighted or trademarks.
The same applies to the World Cup...
The problem is, use of these words with a context to either the Olympics or World Cup.
If they are used in association with other words pertaining to either the Olympics or World Cup, then there could be repercussions.
ie, if a website was created to benefit financially from use of the domain name, for example - www.london2012olympics.com, and this site sold goods on it by association, then this is an infringement of LOAR & LOCOG.
But if the site were purely a blog site or something similiar where there is no financial gain, then this should be ok. Although the content may upset some, but that is a different story.
The same, well pretty similiar goes for world cup type domains, but a bit more long winded.
I hope this clears things up a bit.
I had to check this out as I have some names regged for the next olympics.

The point isn't whether or not you may luck into a sale of one of your names; the point is that they're trademark-based names, and to try profit off someone else's trademark is illegal.

First, yes a lot of people still register trademark names.

Second, many of them get Cease & Desist letters; some of them actually get sued.

Third, many of them don't ever get caught.

Fourth, occasionally, some of them even sell the trademark-based name for a profit.

Now, in the above statements substitute 'deal drugs' for 'trademarked names' and maybe you'll get what we're saying. It's illegal, but a lot of people do it. Some get away with it, some actually make a lot of money, many get caught, either before or after making money at it.

What you're in effect saying is 'Sure, it's illegal, but other people look like they're making money from it, so why can't I try too?'

The answer is: on this forum, we're always going to advise you not to do it. There's no point in putting a TM name up for appraisal, we're gonna give you the same answer every time: zero value, and high possibility of problems. Registering TM names isn't in the same class as dealing drugs of course, but they are both designated 'illegal'. Your asking for an appraisal, is like asking us to put an appraisal on something that's against the law to own. We can only say 'It's against the law to own that; get rid of it'.

Most of us used to have a few TM names, myself included, but in the last few years laws (and consequences) have really tightened up, and also domaining 'ethics' have kicked into a higher gear to give us serious domainers more cred and respect...

Make your own choices. Personally - and this isn't a moral judgement - I say it isn't worth it, in any way, to risk having a TM-based name; just not a good business decision :)

Welcome to the forum, good luck here

Hi,
Regarding your reply, these names are NOT trademark names, they are PROTECTED names, see above post.
You can have them, but you CANNOT profit from the use of them, ie build a website selling stuff associated with the games or claim any association with them, without their express permission.

really its too hard when you think to keep domains for 7 years from now to get a fair value for them at year 2018!
this could be done if the profit will be something like $xxx, xxx but never if the profit is $xxx

USPTO disagrees with you; for example, they list 319 TRADEMARKS associated with World Cup; here's just one of them:

As for the Olympic trademarks... they're pretty famously defended as being trademarks. www.inta.org can help clear things up (inta is the INternational Trademark Association).

Even a comedian can help clear this up:
http://www.broadcastlawblog.com/201...ert-olympics-coverage-explains-trademark-law/

But your other statement is right: it seems permissible to use trademarks in a domain name and website, if you're not implying any connection with the trademark owner, if you're not profiting from similar use of the trademark, and especially if you're doing some kind of a (usually anti-company) blog/commentary/rant about them.
