It has something to do with bots not being able to recognize them as domains but I don't fully understand it myself.

When Google recognizes it as a domain name and indexes it, potential buyers will find out how much the domain is appraised for when searching the domain name and end up at this forum.

You just don't want that..

Yes but (.) looks like a boob!!!! I laugh every time I see it!!!
Anyway...I think the names don't have much value even though you could still find some buyers who are EMDs fans.
EMDs have been extremely successful in the " old " internet when you could buy a name like that, pit together a 5 page crappy website, paste some adsense and make some money but since Google drastically changed their algorithm that game doesn't work anymore...Consequently the value of those domains dropped.

EMD's still rank strong. You just have to keep a close eye on the backlinks. No exact match anchor and such. Anyway, those domains aren't bad but it will be kind of hard to get end users interested in them.
