Is it ok to by place names and if so are they worth anything??

For example England.com now yes I know its not available but are you allowed to buy it if it was?

Also village and town names?? Or would the local council have something to say about it?

It is very difficult to buy a place name .com nowaday! If you find one that has some fame, not hesitate to register!

depends on the country, city, or town :) Obviously all the big cities and countries are taken. If you develop them into a information site about that country/city they will hold some value - especially if it's a tourist destination or in general a much travelled area. As stated though - the country / city would have to be a well known or popular place if the domain was to hold any great value.

One attempt is that you add some key word like net, guide to every famous palces to see if they are taken!

I would say NO, unless you want to target the population in that country and give them information on travel destinations :)
