Picking up a dropped domain

I have been watching and waiting for a domain to expire ownership for several months now, and it is now a matter of days away. I have never done this before so I want to be prepared and i want to do everything I need to do to snatch this domain if it does indeed drop.

The name is registered with Godaddy, so I placed a backorder with them. I placed a backorder with pool.com as a backup as well. Now, I know godaddy will try to auction this name before releasing it to me under backorder, so does this mean I should place a bid just to be sure someone else doesn't bid and win it first? Wouldn't this defeat the point of backordering it? And how do I even know when it has been placed on auction in the first place? Will Godaddy notify me?

I'm just afraid I'm going to miss out on this name due to my own ignorance on the whole process.......

Does it already have a PENDING DELETE status?

to be on the "safe" side if it's a premium domain there's no way you'll simply back-order instead register with Pool.com and SnapNames.com and check if there's an auction going on for it...

No Sir, it is not pending delete yet. It will expire in a few days I realize there is a grace period and stuff, but I am trying stay ahead of the game by learning what I need to do now, as oppossed to learning what I *should* have done after the fact...

if it's still owned and he doesn't renew and it isn't premium name in which case will be auction the procedure is as follows:

(1) on hold for 45 days / Registrar may delete
(2) Redemption grace period for 30 days / Owner may register
(3) Pending deletion after 5 days / released to public

I wouldn't say it is a super premium domain, but it is a .com and it is a short name, that has meaning, so it certainly has value, in my eyes anyway. I am wanting the domain so that I can work with it though, not so I can turn around and sell it...

it doesn't really matter whether you want to resell or develop.. the market is very agressive and all premium drops end up in auctions.... if it's a word.com or .net and short it can fetch upwards of $5K if it's LLL.com/.net they start at $700 (.net) and $3000 (.com)

So what is the process if it goes to auction?
