Anticipating interest in blu-ray when Playstation 3 comes out in NOV. It will have a blu-ray player.

There will be massive interest in Blu-ray because the first 500,000 PS3 consoles will ship with a movie in the box. Disney is also starting to advertise Blu-ray in their DVD trailers. I don't see much of a future for the XBox 360 HD-DVD add-on just based on the performance of past console peripherals.

What about TM issues? Bluray is a trademark and those who own it are notoriously jealous of their TM's...

You mean protective, not jealous. Yes, there are TM issues, although application will depend on use, levels of enforcement and the depth of the TM violation across the industry.

Oxford Dictionary said:
jealous |?jel?s| 3 โ€ข fiercely protective or vigilant of one's rights or possessions : Howard is still a little jealous of his authority | they kept a jealous eye over their interests.

But you're right, protective is a better word, and thanks for your comment. It looks like hundreds of bluray domain names have been registered, and blu-ray.com is still alive, and it's not the official site.

Encouraged, I regged a few blu-ray names :)

bluraypriceguide.com
mobilebluray.com
bluraymoviez.com
blurayeggs.com
whatbluray.com
blurayreleases.info
blurayrecorder.info
blurayburners.info
bluraybuyersguide.net
adultbluray.info
adultbluray.biz

What say you? Good grabs, lousy ones, so-so?

While you're technically right, the tertiary definition of jealous applies, I haven't found it to be common, but it could work (just not in vernacular as much.)

With respect to those registrations, they seem okay, although not overly strong. Given the ratio of marginal utility to risk in these cases, I would say the TM potential wins out: no remaining names are sufficiently strong to justify a potential WIPO/C&D case over the use of BluRay in a domain. Just my two cents. Cheers

Some research on the US Patent and Trademark Office shows that "Blu-Ray Disc" is owned by the BDA (sony, etc).

"Blu-Ray" was trademarked by an US engineering company in 1965. They renewed the trademark in 1986. "Bluray" is not a trademark.

Don't know how this will affect domainers, but for now I will keep regging blu-ray domains. :)

will consumers type in "blu-ray" or "bluray" ... "HDDVD" or "HD-DVD"??

Perhaps BlueRay (they'll have to learn to drop the 'e')

Incidentally, BlueRay .com is owned by a small company unrelated to the technology

ok, i mean... with or without the "-"
The actual names are "Blu-ray" and "HD DVD" (2 different standards by 2 bodies), IIRC

But, will an average joe type the "-" or not??

In short, Joe/Jane will not generally type the "-"

BluRay will likely win out in this race, although QWERTY and BetaMax suggest not to bet the farm on it...

I agree - BluRay is better marketed - and integration into Playstation /XBox - definitely smells like victory.

hello

I think that domains like adultbluray.biz/info/org will not have a worth, because they will not have type-ins. only top keys will have type-ins with a biz/org/info like bluray.biz

so I think bluray will win the race

I think blu-ray discs will become very popular over the next few years, and eventually beat out HD-DVD's, but the one thing that has stopped me from registering any domains is the spelling issue. There are just so many possibilities, and in the end only one will likely win out. Whether its blu-ray, blue-ray, blue ray, blu ray, blueray, bluray, etc, I just don't like the chances. Plus I don't think the term blu-ray will become synonymous with movie as DVD currently is. While today people will say, "Let's watch the DVD", I don't think people will ever say "Let's watch the blu-ray".

I agree that there are too many variations to pick out a sure winner:
>blu-ray, blue-ray, blue ray, blu ray, blueray, bluray

1. We can rule out the empty spaces since they can't be used in domains.
2. Blueray or blue-ray traffic will shrink as consumers get educated on the tech.
3. That leaves blu-ray or bluray for type-ins, search engines, etc.

I think consumers will recognize both as having the same meaning. Blu-ray has much higher overture numbers, but blurayblahblah.com looks better.
I have invested in both since all the big CE companies use both in their domains.

Still a gamble, I know. Besides, we could all be watching HD-DVD this time next year.

We have to hope this is a standard that will catch on and prosper.. we no longer have laser disc technology, yet that was "THE" thing at one time.

With all the marketing $$$ behind it I think blu-ray or maybe BD will become synonymous with "movie" or at least "HD movie". DVD will mean "low-res movie" or old tech like VHS does now.

Remember, less than 10 years ago "Let's watch a movie" meant play a VHS videotape on your VCR. The terms plasma, LCD, DLP, DVR or Tivo had nothing to do with watching a movie, but now they are household terms.

I still constantly hear people watching a DVD refer to it as a "tape".

Hi Tom, see if this sounds better to you:
"Let's watch the BD"

(just a suggestion;))
