One of the major producers of dog/cat food have just issued a recall on 49 brands of dog food and 40 brands of cat food, including many 'store' brands and private-labels. You can find the brands affected by visiting the following links.

Check these lists for your pet's food.

Dog food: http://www.menufoods.com/recall/product_dog.html
Cat food: http://www.menufoods.com/recall/product_cat.html

DO NOT USE. Return food to the store for a refund, or throw it away.

It's the 'wet' canned food, and the 'pouch' foods that are affected. Several animals have suffered kidney failure from it, and all the food produced at the particular plant is being recalled, and should not be used. UPDATE March 23: Sixteen (16) animals have died from eating it. :(

This same company produces the food for many private-label brands, and generic 'store' brands, so make sure to check the lists above, and see if your brand is included in the recall.

Helpful info. Thanks -db-. We have 5 dogs and 3 cats. Fortunately, their dinner is not on the lists.

Thanks for the link, -db-. Luckily my cats don't eat any of those brands.

Thanks for the public service post -db-. Our cat feasts exclusively on Nutro Natural Choice but his specific food isn't on the list.

Thanks for the list. I have 2 feline's and was sweating bullets. Checked the listing, and it appears they have both namebrand and generic. Neither of the namebrand or generic I buy are on the list. But I am surprise that Iams and paws are on the list. They usually are top quality companies.

Our cat actually was affected by the food. We had a mystery problem for about a week. We went on a 2 day vacation and had her boarded with our vet. When she came home she would not eat anything and began drooling and then not drinking anything. This lasted for 2 days...we then took her back to the vet yelling and screaming that they did something to her. The vet (very alarmed) did test after test and couldn't figur anything out.

We had to bring her into the vet every day to get fluid shots, antibiotic shots, blood work etc. The only thing she thought based on the blood work was that her liver/kidneys might be failing....she thought. After about a week back and forth...the cat finally pulled through.

We had no clue, nor did the vet until the cat food report came out. First thing we did was check our food to see if it was on the list and guess what.....it sure as hell was.

A very odd series of events...had we not boarded her we may not have panicked like we did as soon as we did..which led us to screaming at the vet...who panicked because we received our cat not in great shape after the boarding. The vet went above and beyond to save the cat...had she not been so focused in on our cat??? Who knows.

Our cat made it...she's not 100%..she lost alot of weight and hasn't regained her appetite 100% but she's eating and she seems to be stabilized. That's the good news. Now we need to see how the whole poisoned cat food issue plays out. I'll keep you guys updated.

I hope this hasn't happened to any of your cats.

I wonder what was wrong with it?

My cats tend to get dried food. Better for their teeth.

I don't know.

I saw a news update this morning, 7 animals have died from eating it. :(

The company released a statement saying they have not found anything wrong yet, but they continue to search, and they have narrowed it down to a short-list of 1 or 2 key ingredients they suspect might be the source of the problem.

I heard there might have been a possible bacterial issue in the gravy/sauces. Either way it's kind of frightening for us since our cat already went through getting very sick. We're now using Hills Science diet cat food...and there arent too many cat food choices at the moment because of the recall.

We plan on sending our vet bills and a letter from the vet to the company asking for reimbursement of our vet bills. Hopefully this wont be a long and drawn out process.

My hunch is that I won't be seeing a check in the mail anytime real soon!!!
I'll keep everyone posted.

Phew, my dog only eats dry food.

Then again, he also eats plastic, cheese, his own fur, and basicly anything within reach when he is hungry.

I feel your pain :bah:

My dog has just finished eating a Wooden Kitchen Spoon.

She's an idiot. Alsations are not smart dogs, don't believe otherwise.

They mentioned something about a GLUTEN problem... (wheat)
Hope they do an update soon....it's quite scary!

I wonder if any law suits will come of this. I know it sounds frivolous, but imagine if it had been a case of humans going down. Do animals matter less in the grand scheme of things?

It's horrible to think of some old person losing a companion (pet) that they cherished.

(can you tell i have cats?) :)
