I don't know if this is the right area to post in, so forgive me if it is not, but here goes...

I created a personal paypal account to start trading with, and recieved a first payment of £100. Next time I logged in I was informed that my account was limited, and the payment was held by PayPal for investigation.

Then I phoned up paypal to try and figure out what was the matter, and after waiting for ages on the phone, the person on the other end said I had to lift my account limitation before I could unlock my £100. So I've uploaded all the neccessary files etc, to paypal, and I'm waiting for them to drop the two small amounts of money so I can verify the card and bank details.

Anyone had any experience with Paypal and account limitation? Any advice? Because I would like to have my money back and my account back to normal so I can start trading soon. How long does the process take, anyone had this happen to them?

PS. Please no-one suggest changing to e-Gold or WorldPay, because I am NOT leaving £100 sitting in that account. It's my money and I'll be fu**** if I'm letting Paypal have it.

Thanks for your help, all suggestions and advice welcome.

Don't worry. Just follow their steps if your funds are legit, you shouldn't have any problem.

Good luck! :]

Thanks to everyone who contributed to this, my account limits were lifted today, so here's a bit of advice for anyone also stuck in this problem.

Call up the paypal customer service people, and ask to be put through to a supervisor or manager or head of department. The person on the other end said they could not do this, but promised they would watch my account. Next, upload the correct scans or do as they ask (bank statements, whatever), and give it a day. Then phone up again to confirm that they've recieved your files, and ask for your account to be reviewed. The next day it was done for me.

Keep cool, dont shout at the customer service people, but be firm and decisive. Tell them that you would like to have the problem resolved as quickly as possible, and that you are willing to coperate with them.

The rest is a waiting game (although admitidly not a long one :P).

And finaly, I dont understand how people can say "Paypal sucks" or "they fu**** me over" because at the end of the day they're just doing their job to protect regular customers from being hijacked or trading with other illegal paypal accounts. Infact, paypal were quite helpful and efficent in unlocking my account. So paypal, 9/10 :)

Well, paypal rules the world at the moment and they can do whatever they want. In most cases if they found any suspicious activity or funds they limit the accounts.
So I guess a new user of paypal would not happy with the way paypal is dealing.

Well, I've had a limit on my PP long time ago and it was lifted in a few days without any phone call and without any intervention of a "manager or head of department". All you need to do is to send the scans and eventually an email.

Hiowever, good to see your limit is lifted.

I've found PayPal to be very efficient, as a transaction process.

But...they screw you on exchange rates.....I sold a domain for $xxxx Euro, and the funds were received into my PayPal account.....They converted the Euro into AUD - and the exchange rate they used on the day was $200 AUD LESS than TWO other exchange rate services that I checked on that same day...

...ie they converted at a lower rate than the market, and pocketed $200 of mine, as a result!!

Also, when I pay for a domain in, say, $US - EVERY time the exchange rate they use is again lower than other exchange rate services...ie I pay more than I should in $AUD.

They make money on the sly, on the way through - in addition to the declared 4% fee they charge.

Not impressed by that.

No offense but how else do you suppose they make money and continue on as a business?

I take note of their exchange rates every single time but in terms of convenience, they're among the number one payment gateways. So until a better one comes along... (Google Checkout?)

All exchange transactions make money for the intermediary, paypal just make more than most.

And be aware that domains are not considered "real" and you have the potential to get screwed over- I am 35 euro light because of such a transaction and paypals abject failure to support me against a registrar that now has my money. :tri:

I would be one of the first to move if another "good" option was available.

I had a premier account locked recently.

one of the steps for resolution is for me to give them permission to run a credit report on me.

Paypal does have some flaws, like all businesses.

However, they are just too prevalent on the web to be ignored and without a Paypal account, online trading becomes a LOT harder.
Google checkout seems to be 'relatively' struggling so a viable replacement is not that close.

Upgrade to Premier or Business and make the most of it/

That's just the start of them, to be honest. Sometimes they really can screw you around.

Over a year ago now, PayPal had a bug whereby they were sending 100s of "Subscription payment receipt" e-mails (for every single subscription sent). I ended up getting around 2,000 of these e-mails within a week; it flooded my inbox. I contacted their support loads, but many simply weren't aware of the issue. After it got fixed, they never apologised or anything.

A few weeks ago my business account got limited. I got an e-mail saying "Check the resolution centre", however the resolution centre simply said "Check your e-mails", etc. I ended up having to chase everything up via the phone, and just get some department-specific e-mail addresses and spam them (;)) until the issue was fixed.

Plus they don't exactly protect sellers much.

But apart from that they are quite good ;) The problem, like with any big company, is that no-one is accountable when things go wrong. Plus if it's a "complex" (or not ordinary) query, their customer service staff won't have a clue and will just try and fob you off.

Good job on getting your account limit fixed though :)

You can get all this done without phone calls just by following their online instructions. 10 years on Paypal and I don't think I have called them one time.

My account was limited four times and I managed to lift the limitation each time. Just follow the steps that they ask of you and you should get your account back in no time.

You should be following the steps provided by Paypal in order to lift the limitation. The sole intention of limiting the accounts is the privacy and accuracy provided by Paypal but most of the times it feels very annoying.

Once verified it is smooth as butter :)

Happened to me in starting. But I waited it out. Also happened when I first withdrew a check. It never reached me. So cancelled it and again got a new check. :D it was a 6 month nightmare.

After that never had any problems except some delays in withdrawals etc.

My account has been limited for one time, because of a scam buyer declaring he hasn't received anything. We're talking about a website+domain, $x,xxx.

Called them, explained the situation and then a kind guy told me to provide them some proofs of the done transaction.
With the help of GoDaddy support (yes!) i spent only 3 days to have my account back, and the buyer account was banned.

After of that, never had any little problems with them. And i hope to not have any, after of my post here ;)
