Since I have pinpointed only a few niches and paid no more than reg fee, I am able to have a modest yet handsome portfolio of many extensions with more than half being .tv.The tv names cost no more than a bottle of decent bourbon, and unlike the hootch which could go in a short time, the extension is good for a year.

It is a common argument, that paeople only paid reg fee, it doesn't mean much though when people own more than a couple fo names, most have significant sums invested. You know yourself though whether it was a profitable move if you've been in the market over a year.

I have sent powerpoint presentations to a few media and sports concerns but got the email addresses from the internet so I do not know how legit or up to date they were. I send emails one at a time, no batches, a few said thanks but not now, will keep on file though for future reference.

How many bought? That is what counts, not how many made a polite comment when saying no.

To reply to your first statement, I am in for the long haul, and am patient(where have I seen that word before? Oh yeah, it's the name of this thread.) enough to see it through.

Secondly, I would have liked to have sold everyone I own, but that not being the case, am appreciative of the kindness offered to me by potential buyers. Just gotta keep pluggin' away, Snoop. It's all good with me.

I found some beer....

When you go to the grocery store and browse the meat department, there are many cuts of meat from which to choose. If you don't want to spend the big bucks on fillets (.COM), ribeyes (.NET), or porterhouse (.ORG), you can always buy cube steak.

I think .TV is like cube steak. It's hard to chew, tough to swallow, and a real b*&ch to digest.

Only difference is it isn't cheapest choice, in fact it is of the most expensive.

Yes, Patience is a Virtue :)

// Wish I had more of it.

Im with you! mine ran out a long time ago with this extension. Its not a domainers extension IMO.

I do see a lot of great sites though and some real quality sites to boot..

Its a small niche unfortunately (or fortunately) and it will be what it is today.... a slow stable climber.

Great names in this extension have to make sense to the TV / Video genre - if they do, they should sell depending on the renewal fee..

Long Live .TV :hehe:

Operative word here is "choice". I t happens to be an individual one. Knock mine if you will or may, but it is a choice I am happy and confident with.

Beer? Now you are speaking MY language! :hehe:

.tv doesn't seem to be any of those grades you mention. maybe a sushi(or tofu). Not for all tastes but many swear by it and live on it!

Yep! A staple daily diet for over 100 million people(Japan and rest of world) and tofu about the same. It all depends on one's diet, taste and preference, I guess.

Anyway mine, like theirs, are more than likely a false analogy.

If there was a good proportion of success stories there wouldn't be as many naysayers as their is.

I see, like, 2 maybe 3 naysayers, and they insist on spending their lives in a forum focussing on an extension that they dislike.

Just to continue with your analogy.... you are obviously shopping in the wrong grocery store.....

It's obvious what your opinion is regarding .TV, just as SNOOP's opinion is obvious.

But regarding your analogy above: I like it, I see where you are going with it... but is it truly fitting? I know what you are trying to say... and I have tried to put myself in your shoes when I read your posts... but I don't see it the way you do in the illustration above. It all comes down to personal preference, what your business model is and so many other factors...

regarding your "meat" example above... I'm not sure what the best analogy is... but in my opinion, I don't see COM, NET, ORG, TV the way you do.

.TV is simply another "choice". Perhaps the "restaurant" analogy suits it better...

you can choose to eat MEAT (Beef) from various restaurants...

some people enjoy going to all you can eat steak buffets (yes they exist)
other people prefer only the most expensive steak houses.
while others have no desire to eat meat whatsoever

They are so many choices and preferences within that range. But you need to remember: everyone has an opinion on what the best steak restaurant is (favorite)... based on their personal experiences... but also based on reviews from their peers and those outside their circle. Some people form their opinions without trying other options.

Two people can walk into the same restaurant, order the same meal, have it prepared by the same chef, exactly the same way... and walk out with completely different experiences. It doesn't matter if it is the cheapest restaurant or the most expensive restaurant... it's a fact of life.

Even if you love a restaurant, it only takes one visit for them to completely change your mind.
Even if you love .TV, one bad investment will make you hate the extension.
If you have a bad experience with a restaurant, you will share that review with others... that is what I believe Microguy and Snoop, and others are doing. Nothing wrong with that. It's their opinion based on their own experiences.

We all know that bad news travels fast... bad reviews get posted and shared quickly PLUS more often than good reviews. People often share their bad reviews with everyone, while good reviews are seldom shared and if so, it is usually within your own circle of family, friends, associates.

I don't have a problem with Microguy & Snoop, if I did in the past, I don't now... what I do have a problem with is simple: If I enjoy going to a particular restaurant (.TV) - while not my favorite one, I like eating there, it's been a great experience OVERALL, not every dish was delicious or satisfying, but many were. Some items on the menu cost more than others, but just because the item was priced higher didn't always guarantee a better dining experience. But, I still love that restaurant and enjoy going there. MG & Snoop have told me that they don't like this restaurant. They've told me why. I understand why they don't like it. But telling me their opinion VERSUS picketing outside the restaurant are 2 totally different things. They spend their time picketing outside and tell everyone going into the restaurant that the food is bad, that there are better options out there, etc. They spend lots of their time going out of their way to spread their message. Snoop even posted recently that he visited another .TV board (full of fans/supporters) to see what was going on. If Microguy and Snoop want to continue picketing... great. That's their right. But if they've already told ME their opinion and I'm trying to go to one of my favorite restaurants, let me pass without having to hear your opinion again.

This isn't an attack on Snoop or Microguy and I hope no one sees it that way and I apologize to them if they feel it is an attack. I see this board as a valuable resource that people should be able to tap into to grow their business, a place to network... but too many people are busy fighting, arguing, debating, regurgitating... and what was once a valuable resource will wither away and disappear. I'm not speaking about the .TV section only... and I'm not saying NamePros is the only industry forum affected. It is happening across the board... and it is disappointing, depressing and makes me wonder if other people are here to network & collaborate (if so, PM me). Perhaps too many people are feeling the pain of the economy and taking out their anger & frustration by venting on NamePros.

(Sorry about the rant above... I'll get back on track)

.TV is here to stay, love it or hate it. We hear many of the bad experiences and not many of the good ones. The people who don't like .TV are more vocal than those who do like it. .TV has brought success to some, and failure to others... and in some cases, people have tasted both success & failure with .TV. Based on my own experiences (which involve direct inquiries and a constant stream of communication (initiated by me) with worldwide end-users, media companies, development companies, startups, venture firms, etc): I currently see .TV being more embraced throughout Europe and Asia versus USA, but US adoption is happening slowly.

my opinion on .TV:

If you like to buy domains to resell them to end-users: .TV is an uphill battle. not impossible, but long road ahead of you.

If you like to buy domains to resell them to other domainers (and make money): currently the .TV aftermarket is almost non-existent. The same can be said about many other facets of the domain industry in this economy.

If you buy domains to park them: .TV, imho, may not be the best choice.

If you buy domains to develop them: .TV is an uphill battle when it comes to search engines, user adoption, awareness, etc. There are many Cons but several strong Pros: including still being able to find/buy great keywords that would cost substantially more in other TLDs.

Good luck to everyone.

My sincere thanks to you, Mr Rhee, for a most profound analysis of the .tv extension and a variation of the "steak" analogy. For myself, that TV is indeed a challenge is a sound opinion and I suppose not for everyone. I have the will and patience to see this journey through in spite of the "pickets", as you so affectonately refer to.

Posters like Snoop and MG do have input that we can share, as I have learned from this thread alone. The risks and rewards of this extension are not for the faint of heart nor is it easy, but I guess that is life in a nutshell as well. I am just glad that I am on board this journey.

Have a great weekend!

I think a said the other day (to someone who was "offended" by .tv naysaying), .tv is not your mother, it is not your girlfriend...... now we can add that is not your favoutite reasuarant to the list either.

People who bought or decided not to buy into the extension made a business decision based on the hope of making money, and clearly almost all lost money on .tv investments. We are now hearing of people who have lost vast amounts of money, like the guy who admitted losing $500,000 on it. There is no point saying "don't mock .tv because I think it", it has obviously performed badly over a period of many years. It is a bit like saying "don't slam AIG because I like it". Maybe go around and tell stock brokers that they should tell people to sell certain stocks or realesate advisors that they shouldn't say certain areas are bad.

The reason why I will continue naysaying in this space, and the reason I started is a balance against the cheerleaders, make no mistake my aim is to dissuade people from investing in this area, I hate seeing people lose money on investments that have always done badly especially when an area is domainated by cheerleaders (which is what .tv was) who try and censor and repel any attempt to give people the alternate viewpoint.

Not a problem with me, Snoop. Carry on your merry crusade as you feel you must. But your picket sign does not prevent me from crossing the picket line, and I am sure that you feel if you can dissuade even one person from buying a .tv, you have achieved your purpose in life.

I admire your tenacity, spirit and altruism. Bravo!

I am sure you will carry on 'til your last breath, but all you will do is probably become very old and tired in the final analysis. I am neither, just comfortable with a reasonable investment in the extension. I sincerely hope(I really do) that you are enjoying your quest as much as I am enjoying the road that I am on, even though they are diametrically opposed.

Have a great weekend, Snoop.

Snoop... but what right do you or I have to keep people from making their own decisions? What right do we have to hold people back from investing where they please? I'm not here to save anyone from themselves. No one designated us to be their Savior, Protector, Crusader, true? All we can do and should do is tell people to do their own due diligence before investing in any domain name, regardless of extension. The domain industry is not for everyone, obviously, I wouldn't recommend it to my best friends or wish it upon my worst enemy. I've been self-sufficient since 1997 because of the Internet & Domains... but it has always been an uphill battle, fiercely competitive, highly addictive, and I've tasted both success and failure... but based on my own decisions, not because of a TLD.

You openly admit above, and you do so very proudly, that you NAYSAY to "balance" things out... but based on your reply above you make it seem like you can't make money with .TV and that simply isn't true. You keep on saying that the "TLD" performed badly... is the TLD to blame or have people simply made poor business decisions and bad investments? People have to learn to take responsibility for their own actions, they have to learn to do their own research, and as the saying goes: "Only invest what you can afford to lose" and most importantly "Before you invest, investigate."

I never saw the .TV section as a place that was "Censored"... or a place filled with Cheerleaders... I thought the section was here so that like-minded .TV owners/operators/developers/domainers could network... share news... educate others... track the industry/TLD, etc without having to constantly defend their investments and the TLD. But, in hindsight, perhaps that's not the type of environment that belongs on an OPEN forum and maybe that's why it collapsed so quickly leading to the mass exodus. I have very little desire to spend my time arguing, fighting, debating with others... simply to do it... I'd rather spend my time focused on growing my business and finding new revenue streams within the industry and other industries to crossover to. Every second I'm focused on someone else's business, I'm not focused on my own.

There's still lots of great people at NamePros and I like visiting this site and feeling the pulse from different parts of the industry... analyzing so many different mindsets and uncovering the hidden gems. Hopefully someday, the networking will come back to this section, but there are so many forces working against it, so I won't hold my breath. :)

I wish everyone the best and good luck with .TV --- and even though some believe there's no money to be made with the TLD, I would say: it all depends on your business model and your investment decisions, but the most critical component is: YOU. Even if you invest in a great domain, there's no guarantee that you will succeed... and sometimes, that domain may prove more successful in someone else's hands, under someone else's guidance. I've seen it time & time again and experienced it on both sides of the equation...

... How many of us have let a domain expire OR not register an available name OR sell a name cheap... only to see that someone else sold it for a HUGE amount or developed it into something you could not? I've dropped names that have sold at auction/aftermarket for 3 figures, 4, even 5 and who knows if beyond that based on private deals. But I've also been on the receiving end where I bought another domainers fire sale domains, made some cold calls and some tweaks and sold for 5-figures. Picked up cheap drops that have led to massive development deals, leads, partners, etc.

Doesn't matter what the TLD is... there will always be Naysayers VS Cheerleaders... it's up to you to tune out the noise and make a wise decision and then aggressively pursue the opportunities the domain could create, don't wait for opportunity to knock, don't wait for a million dollar check to fall into your lap... and be damn sure that if you ever get a chance to sit at the negotiation table... be DAMN sure... that you know who you're up against AND how to negotiate to get what you're asking for. If you don't have that skill... if you haven't learned the Art of Negotiation... then what the hell are you going to do when a real opportunity arises and you can't make the most of it? You better find someone to partner with who can fill that need or start studying all the free resources available online to master that skill.

If you need a quick lesson and want to know how to play the domain game: get the lyrics & listen to Kenny Rogers song: The Gambler or go here: YouTube - Kenny Rogers - The Gambler) ;)

(enough long posts for now... I'm done, good night.)
