Today I experimented with backordering hyphenated domain names containing nice keywords, and I landed these two. How would you guys appraise them? Also, what's the general ratio of the value of a hyphenated domain names to its non-hyphenated counterpart?

Some stats--

Panama-Realty.com:
* Initially registered on 6/7/2001 (non-hyphenated reg'd on 4/24/2001)
* Registered in 3 extensions (non-hyphenated reg'd in 9 extensions)
* The first page of Google alone shows about a dozen major players in the industry. There are probably at least 3 dozen in all.
* "panama realty" - monthly search volume (Google): 4.4K with some advertiser competition
* "panama real estate" - monthly search volume (Google): 74K with heavy advertiser competition
...but then again, it's hyphenated.

True-News.com, your ultimate source of authentic, unbiased news :)
* Initially registered on 8/15/2000 (non-hyphenated reg'd on 2/7/1997)
* Registered in 7 extensions (non-hyphenated reg'd in 13 extensions, but I think they're all parked)
* Estibot: $50 for hyphenated version, $4800 for non-hypenated
* "true news" - monthly search volume (Google): 6.6K with little advertiser competition
* "unbiased news" - monthly search volume (Google): 2.4K with some advertiser competition
...but this, too, is hyphenated.

I also tried grabbing Discovery-Museum.com (74K monthly Google search volume), but someone else got to it first.

I'm wondering whether the absence of replies is due to the time I posted, the fact these domains are tough to appraise, the fact these names are worthless, or just plain bad luck. Whatever the case, I'd love to hear some feedback.

Hyphen domains are notoriously undervalued.

I will ignore it (the hypen) for the time being and conclude that this domain could sell to the right end-user for high $xxx (conservative estimate) to low $x,xxx.

A few thoughts:

"Real Estate" is preferable to "Realty".

There have been a number of high grossing hyphen sales in recent times, just check out what has proven to be a fantastic resource for me:
http://www.namepros.com/domain-name...rted-hyphen-domain-sale.html?highlight=hyphen
(although I'm convinced you will have already seen that thread).

The dash is generally feared only by domainers, NOT end-users. In my experience end-users focus more on the quality of the keywords. I really don't think there would be much of a choice to make for the average end-user between PanamaRealty.com and Panama-Realty.com, should the latter be on offer for a lower price.

Because domainers are so reluctant to buy into the hyphen franchise it makes achieving reseller rates somewhat difficult (if not impossible). For that reason alone, I would target end-users.

Panama is a popular tourist destination and your keyword combination is all-encompassing, this provides you with a wider market and an increased likelihood of a quick sale (should you want to sell it on).

Best of luck with it :)

A gloriously reassuring post. I'd rep you except it seems NamePros believes I'm already too fond of you.

I actually haven't seen the hyphen sales tread before. Browsing through it, the figures look really promising. I guess I feared it would be cumbersome for a pal to tell his friend, "hey, I found this lovely real estate resource at Panama hyphen real estate dot com -- go check it out!" But in a market sector like realty, word might well be spread through business cards and site backlinks, in which the hyphen issue is moot.

Any other assessments of Panama-Realty.com? How about True-News.com?

Ha, no worries, rep points for appraisals are now a no go area anyway.

Good luck with it my man, and keep me informed as to how you get on.
