Page Titles and Keywords - Should they vary page to page?

Edit:

So I found out it's a good idea to do this. But I have another question I did not find an answer to...

Right now I am making a header.php which will assign title/keywords based on page value. Should I try to keep the keywords as unique as possible, or should I include a generic set of keywords + unique set of keywords for every page?

Right now I am setting it up like this... (Generic are the same 5 keywords)

Index: Generic + 5 Strong Keywords
Page: Generic + 2-3 Unique Keywords

Or should I do...

Index: Generic + 5 Strong Keywords
Page: 2-3 Unique Keywords

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.

meta keywords don't play that big a role (if any) anymore, and i'm sure the difference between the two options you've laid out are minimal. of the two i'd go with the first one though.

I wouldn't put any keywords into the keywords meta that aren't relevant to what's on that particular page. The keywords meta is pretty useless - it doesn't do much (if anything) FOR you - but it can count AGAINST you (if search engines think it looks like spam).

Cut down the number

After the Generic term I'd cut down on the number of keywords. I'd use option one but with less keywords.

i think there is still some importance to meta keywords and meta title too ...

while we search some keyword in Google then that keyword used in our title are displayed in bold ...

I suggest you keep your titles accurate and informative. Putting irrelevant keywords will not help. So, you can have any title which perfectly describes your site or pages.

Keep your title dead on for the keyword you are targetting

I'd suggest you try to keep it as 'natural' as possible. What would a real human-edited page look like? Try and replicate that, because that's what search engines like.

I think that you should go for your first choice. And I believe that using meta keywords are still useful in some ways.

Agreed. My method for meta keywords is to Copy > Paste directly from content to "validate" content with page title.

Better you not change title or different title every page. Its not necessary.

It most certainly IS necessary. Duplicate title tags one of the easiest ways to get hit with a rankings penalty.

Google's webmaster tools reports pages with duplicate title tags as an "issue" - that should tell you something.

The titles should be different and shouldn't contain keywords that aren't on that particular page.

How about pages that do not have content on them, such as a contact page or external link page? I assume it would be best to just leave the meta keywords empty?

i don't think it makes that much of a difference, but you could simply throw in "contact page, sitename" or something to that effect.

I dont think it makes any difference either

so are title tags in diffrent pages a must? even if you've got hundreds-thousands of pages?

they aren't a must, but it's something that should be done even if you have hundreds-thousands of pages... assuming that they aren't all duplicate content.

if you're actually managing a site that large then you probably have figured out a way to generate this on-the-fly. if not, then get someone else to redo the site and manage it for you.

The title should not be the same for each web page. Get a unique title for each page concentrating on single or two keywords.
