What's the estibot amount?

I thought that any change of ownership (or was that nameservers) caused the PR to go back to zero at the next Google Update.

^^Change of registrar would go back to zero.

So if he registers the domain at the same registrar, it will retain it's page rank?

I don't think this matters, as soon as he buys the domain name he will put fresh content on it, with new links and backlinks which will mean that all the old ones point to nothing.

When Google does its next deep crawl of the internet then it will notice all these dead links leading to a site that doesn't exist and remove its PR.

Page rank only stays so long as you have the pages that generated it exist, if you remove them then over time your PR will fall unless replaced by something of more worth.

If I am wrong maybe someone an correct me but I don't think I am, otherwise every website would be pr9-10 by now.

Domains do not retain PR, websites do.

Domains do not retain PR, websites do.

Domains most certainly retain PR even if they drop, change ownership or registrar. As long as your backlinks PR doesn't charge either should yours.

You did not read what I wrote.

If the pages that the backlinks point to still exist on an actual website then the PR will be retained, but as he is buying just the domain name then none of those backlinks would point to anything except maybe the homepage which may not even be relevant.

If all you needed to do in order to get a pr10 site is spam billions of links then it would all be too easy, you have to have actual content being pointed to as well.

Buy a page ranked domain by all means if you wish it, but don't buy simply because of a number that could change due to any amount of shifting whims of Google.

Even if you copied all the content of the old site, Google will penalize the domain name since the registration date will be new instead of the old reg date.

Well he says he is buying a PR3 domain so I assume the PR is on the homepage and if the links are pointing to the homepage and the backlinks don't change it may drop PR on the next update but regain it in following updates. Why do you think PR5+ domains go for so much in the expiring aftermarket?

He doesn't need the actual content of the former site, although it would be nice, he can put up whatever he wants and it will hold PR. There are sites with no content that still hold PR update after update.

I agree with this post... I have bought hundreds of domains with pageranks, and this is exactly what happens..

He doesn't say about buying a name. He says about hand registering it.....

Check the backlinks on something like Yahoo Site Explorer. If there's a good population of valid PR 4+ domains linking back, it might be worth a buy.

The majority of expired domains claiming PR were in fact forged.
