1600 coloring book domain names is a lot of coloring book domain names. But that's how many Really Big Coloring Books® Inc. just acquired as they bought out their top competitor. In a weird twist the competitor was not mentioned in the press release. Really Big Coloring Books owns the domain name coloringbook.com and now has what I would imagine is a stranglehold on the world of … [Read more...]

Thank you @equity78. I'm guessing coloring books are a popular item right now.

1600 might seem excessive but there is a reason to the madness. I own about 210 domains and counting related to my niche (marked not for resale) most of which I purchased in the last month. The points are to increase branding, improve marketing campaigns and tracking, increase type in traffic, but especially to keep good generic and brandable names away from competitors of the same product. If you own all the good names you can dominate your niche. Your competitors have no choice but to use inferior names or pay an arm or a leg.

It is a pity there are no examples of the domains or any other details. It seems he bought the business and the names came as bonus, but he is very proud of this aspect. Normally, people focus on sales, market share etc.

I assume, it could include names like kidscoloringbook, sportscoloringbooks etc. and probably include some target type-in traffic. If their good niche names and each contribute even 3 visitors a month, that is around 50000 target audience. You convert 5% of those, that is 2500 sales per month and possibly many becoming recurring buyers.

Maybe it's a huge PBN / seo network of developed sites and not just domains (this would explain not wanting to "out" the domains), maybe affiliate sites and not even a company that makes coloring books?

In any case, if even a small portion of these names are developed, it could be bringing in significantly more traffic and sales than the estimate above. If the former owner was just an affiliate who made a small % from each sale, the new owner who makes their own coloring books will be able to benefit from much higher earnings per sale.

Also, kind of an interesting statement from the owner in the article... Protecting America from the threat of foreign coloring book companies? Okay lol.

Well, the press release mentions that the company was his biggest competitor, so apparently not an affiliate network, but a real company and big website, with a possibility of many minisites to drive traffic. The smartest would have been forwarding each domain to relevant section/category of their site. Possibly, use few for own PBN etc.

So, these companies were 1, 2 in the USA, and 1 bought the 2, while he also thinks that he protected USA from a foreign company entrance ))) From the release, it seems 2 was a major thorn on the side of 1, so he is even relieved to finally have him bought out.

You're welcome. That one caught my eye as well. This is just a 500 name sample but by the looks of it they've got the market cornered.

Good to see they also went for matching colour domains, spelled the correct way ;)

@equity78 -- Are you sure Really Big Coloring Books acquired 1600 domains, or could that be, a total representation of Really Big Coloring Books current portfolio size?

The really Big Coloring Books Wikipedia page quotes,
Now, noting, recent registrations such as

And seeing how the cited EINNews article states,

I wonder if Really Big Coloring Books now manages their previous portfolio (which at one point was 1100 domain names) and now another 1600 domain names, to possibly totaling around 2500 domains under management?

Or, maybe I misread the headline/article, and Really Big Coloring Books, simply acquired ONE, or maybe a couple of domain names, perhaps a category killer domain name such as ColoringBooks.com

If you watch the video in the Press Release, you'll notice Wayne smile handsomely as he starts the video saying, "This is Wayne Bell in St. Louis at ColoringBook.com, ColoringBooks.com"

Wayne could have meant ColouringBooks.com, as ColouringBooks.com redirects to ColoringBook.com, however, as of now, ColoringBooks.com also redirects to ColoringBook.com

Which leads me to believe, the competitor that Really Big Coloring Books had acquired, might have been ColoringBooks.com.

Note the recent WHOIS change from Uniregistrar to Network Solutions. (Note: ColoringBook.com is also registered at NetSol)

Then, consider the recent Flippa Auction for ColoringBooks.com that ended unsold 118 days ago.

Yes I think you are right Grilled and updated article Thank you. It's odd not naming the competitor in the press release.

This is why I hate these types of words.

    "Color" in the US
    "Colour" in Britain

One example, of many. Great point.

Forgot to say if reserve, which may dissuade bids -- Unsold isn't a great indicator, I avoid Flippa, suspect many too. Still great sleuthing, if mad enough get 1600, should've got 3200? -- One of each? :-P Or is it 100% color? I see a lot of room for ambiguity.

    Dont be an arse (British)
    Be an a*s (American)
Seriously folks, try avoid ambiguous spellings’

Why would you give competitor free publicity?

On a related note, I noticed that on the DAN.com homepage today ColoringPages.com was listed as a highly viewed name. I immediately thought about the "Big Ass Coloring Book Company" lol Perhaps they should add it to their 1600 domain collection.
