The Ovidio syndicate, a group of non-EU speculators, has been dumping .eu domains. They used a Cyprus front company (Ovidio Limited) to register at least 75K .eu domains for a direct navigation network. As a result, the .eu domain count for Cyprus was abnormally high. At the start of April it had 91K .eu domains. Now, a month later, Cyprus has 52.4K domains. Most of the Cyprus drops are Ovidio domains. Approximately 31K identified .eu domains that were hosted on Ovidio nameservers have been deleted. A quick check of some of these domains show that they are in quarantine - the first step in the .eu deletion process. This month is the second anniversary of the .eu landrush fiasco and it is a make or break time for a lot of speculatively registered domains. At least 150K .eu domains were deleted or moved into quarantine in April.

Some of the parking/PPC hosters have also lost significant numbers of .eu domains. Fabulous.com has approximately 12K less identified .eu domains as of 01/May/2008. If direct navigation and parking operations are losing faith in .eu ccTLD, then things are about to get a lot rougher.

I bet there is still little type-in traffic for .eu and they don't have the patience...

It cost them approximately 10 Euros per domain at landrush. That's 750K Euros before paperwork, expertise and paper front companies. The renewal would have been around 350K. So they've spent at least 1.125 Million Euros or roughly $1.5M US. That's a lot of money to recover. If the .eu ccTLD had been a success, they would have had a good chance. But they still have approximately 43K domains. Many of them are not up for renewal yet. The Fabulous.com drops and the Sedoparking.com drops are also an indication that many domains just aren't pulling in enough type-in traffic to justify renewal. As for the general perception of .eu - most people in the EU aren't even aware it exists. Those that are, don't care.

.eu is not a PPC market, but there's a growing number of enduser sales for nice prices. Most of them are either low-profile or non-disclosed but nice deals are made every day.
