You said you had spoke on the phone with the man before he passed. Have you tried dialing that number to see if anyone answers?

About 6 months ago I was in deep talks to partner with an individual who owned a couple of extremely valuable domains. We exchanged ideas via email and phone over the course of 2 months. It was ultimately agreed that we would move forward...my idea, his domains.

Fast forward a few months and I've heard nothing. His email address is now invalid. Today I did a google search and learned that he passed away just after our unofficial partnership was formed.

The domains are registered until 2022 so waiting for expiration isn't an option. What would you do in this situation?

Simple, I would move on.
Unless you had something in writing, with his signature, you are sol as to trying to take advantage of his estate and heirs.

mmmm i wonder if a signature obtained through automatic writing would be legit?

I tracked down his wife and forwarded the email conversation we had. In no way will I attempt to claim the domain for myself through wrongful tactics. She is now aware that the domain exists under her late husbands account. He also owned their lastname.com which she did not know.

If she wants to keep it, great. If she wants to negotiate to sell the domain, great. It's all up to her!

I'm sure a case could be made there. Personally, I wouldn't try it. A written agreement would be a different ball game IMO.

Now that is being a responsible person.
I like that!

A bit of an update.

Last year, before the owner died, they renewed the domains until 2021 and 2022. Now I see one of the domains has a status of "renew period" and a year has been added to expiration, now 2023. Both domains are at networksolutions and both domains now have multiple orders placed at namejet. Seems strange to me!

I do know network solutions use to do a 100 year registration if you wanted it. Not sure if it is still offered. But if that domain is enrolled in that program, a domain can only be registered for a maximum of 10 years. So to get around that, network solutions would register the domain for 10 years and keep renewing it every year until the 100 years are up. So that could be why it appears as though it has been renewed for another year. Not sure if that is the actual answer though as to why it shows as being renewed. Just thought it could be a possibility.

So it's in your name now and nothing happened... so what happened?

I think this will be happening a lot over the next 10-20 years.

I'm guessing this is the very valuable domain that matches your .org.

Cool, things worked out.
