Org Lookup

Hello Mods & Mems,

Perhaps this has been covered already, but what has happened to the Org whois lookup system. Every proggy I use returns errors after a couple names.

This bites big time, and has almost gotten as bad as dot TV where you have to lookup each individual name by hand.

Dont they realize this is costing them serious money?

If anyone know a workaround for this, please post it.

Peace,
Cyberian

I think PIR is blocking the Ip (ranges) after some request come in
at there general server (port 43).

If I am correct any given IP address is alllowed to a max. of 4 queries p/min.
I think that their relay rule really is activated now.

I also think they don't mind the less regs.. as I quote:
.ORG is the home for millions of nonprofit Web sites, including charitable, artistic, scientific, personal, educational, social, cultural and religious sites.

(Let's hope I am wrong and this is just a temp. problem.)

kind regards,

Faisj

No faisj, it is not temporary as it's been like this a couple of months now.
But the 4 per/min is good info since I can set the proggy at that rate when looking them up.

Thanks brother.

Peace

If you use DRT and you have your proxy list updated you won't have a problem.

Running a WHOIS search website, I should know more than most... but I don't!

I haven't seen .org down, but they do seem to limit the amount of searches you can do in a short period of time. I don't think .org is a distributed WHOIS system like .com so they have to limit it in order to survive all the queries!

You have to be careful that they don't ban your IP though if you do do too many in a minute and realise you are a bot or program etc.

This really sucks and gives me heart attacks sometimes as it shows me moon.org as available :D

I once had Property.co.uk show as available. I thought that I had stumbled across a gold-mine but unfortunately when I went to register it I found out it was registered several years prior. :( It has happened to me more times than I can count but that was the most memorable one.

This has been up at the Public Interest Registry for some time:

How is PIR limiting WHOIS Port 43 access for the general public?

PIR will monitor all IP addresses accessing the .ORG WHOIS Port 43 server. All traffic will be logged and rate-limit validation logic will be applied to limit access by any given IP address to a maximum of four queries per minute. If a unique IP address exceeds the limit, the query will be stopped, and a message will be relayed back to the public user indicating that they have exceeded their limit.

Thanks trader, I will set DNA to 3 per just to be safe. Going to seriously damper my list loads tho... lol. Run them during nitey-nite time and that should work. So 4 per is the only limit, correct?

Yes, but you know Cyberian, the problems i had running whois searches on org's just made me go with manual searches the few times I was interested in org domains.I was always too lazy or busy to try figure out how to set up DNA to match that frequency.
I guess I should try somewhere along the line.Hopefully that works for you though.

I just ran five whois queries from my terminal, after the fifth one I get "WHOIS LIMIT EXCEEDED - SEE WWW.PIR.ORG/WHOIS FOR DETAILS". On http://pir.org/whois/ there is the official .org whois service, I tried ten queries on it and it worked fine.

Hope this helps.

download the entire zone for the week or day you are interested from the various services available.
Then do as many searches as you like locally :)
once the zone files are downloaded you can search for any matching 'pending delete' or anything you want using a macro in word (just an example).
hope this helps.

i always get caught out by this. load a list forgetting to change any settings and come back to find all but the first 4 not checked.
I have to change my time frame to 15/16 seconds between each lookup to ensure i dont get banned.
