.org domains -> .com

I've always wondered if somebody has ever put effort into measuring the amount of traffic that is lost to a .com variation of a site that exists in the .org extension. I've googled around a few times to see if i could find an article or some other resource, and have always come up short.

I'm sure others wonder, as well.

Just to be clear, lets say i operate the site superstore.org and carelessly left superstore.com unregistered, and somebody else comes and picks it up.

How much traffic would you expect to have inadvertently sent to superstore.com. This would really only apply to type in traffic, and referring websites that typo the extension.

Any thoughts or links, fellow NPers?

Seems, .com gets few traffic.

I checked 5 high rank .org and their .com versions at Alexa.

Archive .org 220 -- Archive .com 4,254,008

Wiktionary .org 650 -- Wiktionary .com no data

Opensiteexplorer .org 968 -- Opensiteexplorer .com 1,460,881

Change .org 1,415 -- Change .com 456,780

postimage .org 1,583 -- postimage .com 2,378,041


40,000-50,000 Alexa rank gets 80-100 daily unique visitors.
And 800,000-1000,000 rank 10-15 daily unique visitors. (Infos are from my some domain and sites but they can change for other sites. But I don't think there is a huge difference)

So .com's are getting very few traffic imo.

Google adwords keyword tool exact match with extension is a fair proxy for type-in traffic and it suggests significant bleed from famous org to lower profile com:
