I was already aware of OWN.tv, but was not aware that "The Discovery Health channel" is going to become OWN. This is pretty huge. I think the domain was sold too cheap lol!

Harpo productions needs some encouragement to push them over the edge to decide to go with Own.TV

They like to be innovative with their branding. "HARPO" is "OPRAH" spelled backwards. Perhaps with some encouragement they will get serious about settling on branding OWN with "OWN.TV" If they do, all dot tv valuations will increase a little.

Where did you read all this?
I dont know if this is a delay but reading a bit for Oprah I understand that she may feel that date is very good in numerology terms.

I created an account over there at OWN.TV a few months ago, and I am 99.9% positive that I have seen that date (1-11-11) published as their debut date upon my signing up. So, I don't believe that is a delayed date.

As for the issue of .com or .tv???

That would make a pretty positive, immediate impact in WorldWide Dot TV exposure if she does stick with Dot TV.

One more thing:
She recently had a design contest for her Logo.
Many people were complaining that it is pretty ugly, I agree!
but more importantly, I was a little bummed to see it does not have the tld, only "OWN" I was really hoping to see the Logo as "OWN.TV"

I'm not that worried, She's a smart Chicago Girl
She will make a smart decision and for her to have an internet TV Network.
There is only one .tld that makes sense - Dot TV!

The launch date was 11.11.10, so it's understandable that you thought the date was 1.1.11. It has been pushed back 7 weeks. I know someone who knows someone at Harpo.

So, that makes sense. It is easily mis-read 11-11-10 as opposed to 1-11-10. Easy mistake.

Now how about the question of Oprah debating whether or not to use ".com" or ".tv"?

Just curious where that info came from?

She sure has put a LOT of time, energy, and money into the Promotion of OWN.TV. I find it hard to believe she is possibly gonna all of a sudden change her mind...

This is what I 've read here on September 18th and thats what I ve read in oprah.com in these past months.

Either way I don't believe own.tv to be used as own's network working domain, just a redirect.
Launch date is very near and if they chose to work with .tv they should have already created awareness so that people know about the own.tv change many weeks before their launch.

Makis - Normally your take would be correct. But these are anything but normal times for the dot tv space. At some point Harpo had all but decided to drop the plan to use own.tv for OWN. But now, with the "dot tv brand" going mainstream (it is a brand, Snoop), they are reconsidering. Let them know that you would like to see them use OWN.TV as more than a redirect!

If I was inside Harpo then I 'd force Oprah to use a new domain for this new venue and not just a subdirectory/subdomain because its not the best branding option.
.tv is a great option but own.com would be another great one so if what u wrote is the case then I cant say I m jealous of their marketing team.

When you launch a network it has to be branded "something"


The brand is not Oprah.
The brand is OWN.

The question for their marketing firm to wrestle with is how much synergy do they want with Oprah versus becoming standalone... much like Harpo.

I think they do need their own address and I would think Oprah.com/own would redirect to them based on the answer to the first question.

They'll be so big it wouldn't really matter if they were on a .cc. I think .TV works nicely - but I'm not sure it matters and wouldn't be surprised to see them on a totally different .com eventually.

IMO, from web dev/programmng point of view, if they would not use the .tv address then they should have coded in "/own" on Oprah.com navigation link NOT "www.own.tv".

And since it's hardcoded (doesnt look like a "$variable" of a server-side script (PHP/ASP etc.)) so it would be more likely to be permanent. Thus, it would be make more sense to say "Oprah.com/own" is the temporary address.

OWN is a venture 50% owned by Harpo and 50% Discovery Communications.

Christina Norman is the CEO. Oprah seems to be giving her name to the venture and maintaining editorial control.

I'm not sure who's driving what or who's in charge. I found it interesting because I assumed it was a real "network" and not just a cable channel with a bunch of shows on it.

Not that exciting really. It's like Oxygen all over again, isn't it?
