Thanks for the financial advice. When does your book come out?
Passing on the .com is a poor decision if she has any plans for creating a serious online portal.
Only in domain forums do people think someone should buy a domain without even knowing what it might cost then to do so,
A couple of questions,
Firstly,
-Say the owner wanted $100,000, would it have been a good idea to buy it?
-Say the price was $1 million? Good idea then?
-Say the price was $10million? Good idea?
How would you as Oprahs accountant justify her spending that kind of money on a domain, is there an ROI?
Secondly, say the choice is between calling it the Oprah Winfrey Network with a url Oprah.com Versus Own.com, is it worth paying a significant amount to have a url of Own.com?
Where is the benefit in calling your network own.com versus oprah.com? (note the network is currently on oprah.com, lets not get confused about all the talk in here about her using own.tv which is just noise)
If someone really cares that much on the url that they'd spend say $1million on a brandable term maybe they are better off calling it something else from the start eg call it the owc, oprah winfrey channel or ona, oprah network america, likely a dozens of other possibilities. Or is the argument just that she is a billionaire and thus should spend a lot on a domain?
But I have forgotten where I am, the .tv forum. I wont waste my time trying to explain to you guys what a mistake it is to invest serious money into a .tv domain when you don't also own the .com. You have too much money invested in your mistake, you'll never see the light.
The irony that you'd level this at me :o
