Probably was not sold, was probably a C & D letter sent and the name turned over to Oprah. There was nothing mentioned here about a sale so you cannot be sure about what happened it is interesting.

I know nothing about the transaction Dottie it is just my guess that she and her company would be very vigilant protecting her brand.

I don't know about this transaction either. But her company Harpo Inc. does indeed own the trademark "Oprah", so there's a great possibility that she got this name through a C&D letter indeed.

However, I've found that the domain oprahandfriends.us has been bought by Harpo Inc. on March 13th 2007 for $2,000. It's currently been redirected to oprah.com

If she owned the "Oprah" trademark, how come she had to pay for oprahandfriends.us ?

Good point but if it was for sale it would probably be cheaper than instructing her solicitors to draw up a C & D.

There is no problem in owning Oprah.TV, it is a first name. The problem is how you use it. If it in anyway infringes on the trademarks. The term "Marlowe" is tradmarked, I still can own Marlowe.Tv and use it for my own purposes. In this scenario you could facilitate a sale to Harpo Inc., if they came to you, wanted the name, and you were not infringing. Park it and you have problems.

Most folks probably get one C&D or letter from a lawyer and fold their cards.

thats wild because there is a trademark on oprah and friends, since 2006- they bought in 2007?
i think the oprah trademrks on "oprah" are for her logos and drawings of the name, i think-

anyways, just weird- someone had it for sale in this forum, and now, oprah owns it- oprah.tv.
whether it was bought or c&d- oprah wanted her .tv :)

They bought it for $2,000. While this is a good amount of money for most domainers, it's probably much much cheaper than legal fees.

For some reason, lawyers seem to be more expensive than domainers... Maybe we should change something about that... ;)

whether it was bought or c&d- oprah wanted her .tv :)

No celebrity, no major business, no tv channel, no fashion designer, no real estate agent, no sports team, no artist, no travel agency can afford not to have their .tv domain. :talk:
